What firearms are first time gun owners buying?
« on: February 13, 2009, 05:52:38 PM »
I am seeing a whole bunch of non gun owners purchasing or considering purchasing their first firearm.
One guy at work just bought a .380 Bersa because he may want to carry and another is looking into getting a short barreled 12 gauge.

I've gone into gun shops and just looked and listened for first time buyers. They are very easy to spot. It is actually an interesting pastime. I really feel sorry for them as they are so uninformed, but am glad they are making the decision to protect themselves and their loved ones. I really feel sorry for the couples looking to buy small 22 autos for the lady's protection.

Just curious as to what firearms you have knowledge of first time buyers purchasing.

Well personally i wouldnt tell someone not to buy a 22lr pistol or long arm for thier missus to protect herself with... I would recommend some potent ammo for that caliber..The old QUIKSHOK , presegmented to break into 3 equal size pieces as the hollow point expands.. Creating one very nasty hole after another... Along with a good regement of practice, this isnt a bad first start and a great confidence builder .. That will help the transition into a larger caliber later ;)
Also ammo is super cheap and available to let one learn on , with little to no chance for a learned flinch ... And the old rule  "better to have A gun, Then NO gun"

What am i seeing bought ??

Shotguns and alot of 9mm pistols are what im seeing bought more then anything else, And of course the new owners to the AR / AK .. Even some that are buying the AR/AK for the first time are veterans of firearms like our trusted leader GB himself , He just got his first AR ..  Actually scratch that his first 5 ARs or whatever he is up to now haha..

And i have seen a number of my recommended first buys bought ( some revolvers )

But in all honesty you dont see as many first time buyers here in Arkansas as you might in say Cali. or New Jersey

I don't see anything wrong with a .22 as a carry gun myself, either in auto or revolver.

First timers in this area are buying AR, AK, SKS, or old Mosins for rifles, Moss500 persuaders or 870's, and semi-automatic handguns (9mm & 40). You can spot them quite easily.
A long-time good friend is a gunsmith and gunstore owner- he told me many buy him out of milsurp ammo whenever it comes in. He knows of several new customers that are apartment dwellers that have closets full of guns and ammo and have no clue where to go shoot. Many have come in to his store with no idea that Illinausea has a FOID system.
I was in there a couple of weekends ago and a young guy came in with his gal- he had a brand-new Bushmaster in a case to have a scope mounted on it. He had yet to fire it but claimed to have nearly 20K rounds of ammo on hand. Frank and I shook our heads when he left with his gun after purchasing a new Leupold and jumped in his girlfriend's Prius (we guess it was hers) with an Obama/Biden sticker on it. :P
I guess very few find (at least the new buyer) any value in a nice lever-action 30-30, double barrel shotgun, or .357 revolver ::)
