Loads for Uberti 45 Colt
« on: October 07, 2003, 03:12:20 PM »
Don't want to beat the subject to death, but started a new thread just for opinions on loads I intend to use for Uberti's with 4 3/4 inch barrels.  I have a can of Unique to use up and intend to load at 8.1 gr. for general use and 9 gr. as the "hot" load for these, using Laser Cast RNFP, 250 gr.,  and Rem. primers in Starline brass.   I don't have a chrono but approx. what velocities should I get with these?   Also when I run out of Unique I am thinking about Tite group as it supposedly works better with light loads in large cases.  Is there a "hot" load with this that would equal the Unique load.  Thanks for all the help with these.

Your a right on with Unique.  8gr for a light load at about 800fps, 8.5 for factry duplication at about 850fps and 9gr gets about 900fps or a little better.  That's where I would stop with that light frame.  Don't be fooled by the latest magazine article, inside 50 yards that last load will handle about 98% of anything you might ever try.  Sorry I can't help with Titegroup, just haven't tried it yet.  Haven't run out of Unique and Bullseye.  From my studies so far, I believe you will be able to get to about 800fps with that 250gr bullet, but you will probably run into pressure problems after that.  To gain any more speed with Titegroup you will have to drop down in bullet weight.  BOL

Titegroup is fine for medium loads.  Hodgdon list 6.2 gr load with 250 gr bullets.  I am loading 6.0 with 230 gr lead and it does only 750 from a 5.5" bbl New Hartford.  I still like Unique best for .45 colt. (and .44 spl)  They show loads as light as 6.0 gr but I would not go below the 7.5 gr load as pressures seem erratic and they get very dirty.  8.0 for fun and 9.0 for serious, it's tough to beat those two!     44 Man

Thanks for the comments,  shot some loads with 9 gr. Unique today, a little more bark and bite than the 8.1 gr but still very comfortable to shoot.  No signs of primer flattening or any other indications of high pressure.  I don't see the need for anything hotter in these revolvers.

You should really like Titegroup. It has the bark without the bite. Does quite sound like BP but it makes folks think you are shooting real hot (very manly). I like Unique a lot too.
