Picked up a 10" Contender 22 Hornet barrel
and after looking thru my 22 cal bullet selection
I see I have a full box of .223 hornet bullets.
I am pretty sure the barrel is .224
could I shot the .223's ?
I would guess accuracy may be poor.

Mike

Give the .223's a try , I thought the same about some in my 224GNR but they did supprisingly well , grouping at just under 1" @ 100 .

Yup,
Give them a try, you will not hurt anything with the gun!

.223 hornet bullets have a fairly thin jacket. They may upset enough to fill the bore and shoot decently. As Stimpy and CW said - "give 'em a try". Good Shooting and Good Luck

BTW I have a old 10" Octagon Contender barrel and I found the Hornady 45 grain bullet and W296 was a good combination. I have put down a few woodchucks with it. Do not forget to wear hearing protection - the 10" barrel has quite a fireball and is louder than you might think. I never owned or used hearing protection until I started to shoot this barrel - which was in my early days of shooting centerfires.

If you want a real OOPS, I accidentally loaded 20 rounds of 22-250 ackley with the .223 hornet bulltes. Now one wolud think I just wasted time, BUT they grouped 3/8" @ 100 yds at over 4000 fps! If you hit a blade of grass they went pow, but they were cool on crows etc.
