Hey You 6.5 Mini-Dreadnought Shooters!

Can you enlighten the rest of us on the actual velocities you're getting with 120's and 140's with SSK's 6.5 Mini-Dreadnought cartridge? Real world stuff is what we'd like to hear about. This appears to be a great cartridge and we'd like to hear what game you have used it on and what your opinions are regarding performance.

Any load data you wouldn't mind sharing for 120 and 140 grain bullets would also be much appreciated!

I don't have the 6.5 M-D, but I do have the 30-06 JDJ in a rechambered barrel.

JD's velocity claims have been pretty close to what I've been able to achieve with the older T/C barrel I have which has the equal width lands and grooves. I think with the newer style rifling from T/C, it would do as good on the FPS with less pressure.

JD claims 165's @ 2700 fps with his barrels. I've gotten that from mine (2715 fps with 168's).

Hi Javelina,
I have a 6.5MD and have only chronographed fire form loads. The Hornady 140 gr behind 44.0 grains of AA4350 will do 2390 FPS. JD's load sheet lists 49.0 grs as max. If you can wait a week or so I'll try some of the Nosler 120 B.T. I have loaded. Just bought the chronograph this year and haven't shot any of the 120's over it.

No problem with waiting a week. It sounds like you may be close to JD's claimed velocities with this barrel. I'm particularly interested in your results for the 120 grain Noslers - thanks for sharing your findings.

Hi Javelina,
Well I went to the range last week only to find it close for a Regional Bullseye Match. Sure is something to see 90 shooters on the firing line firing rapid fire. Hopefully I'll make it out next week, but I did find two targets that the fellow sent me with the barrel. One load was 2680 FPS and the other was 2648 FPS. Both laods were with the Nosler 120 B.T. The 2680 FPS was one grain off the MAX. load and I'm not sure about the other since the powder wasn't on JD's load sheet.

Hi Javelina,
Well I finally made it to the range yesterday and here are my results.

6.5 MD JDJ All loads were the same powder charge and I'm 1.0 grains off JD's MAX load. My barrel is a 15 incher that is Mag-na-ported.
Nosler 120 B.T. 2690 F.P.S
Sierra 120 Spitzer 2678 F.P.S.
Speer 120 2682 F.P.S.

Your welcome. I will be working up some hunting loads this fall and I'll let you know the results. Too many barrels and not enough time to shoot all of them. While I was at the range the other day I shot some 35-06 JDJ across the chronograph and it didn't fall over!!!! Nosler 225 B.T. 61.0 grs of N140. 2261 FPS. My barrel measures 13 1/2 inches long and if you don't include the brake its 11 1/2 inches. Its a hand full and it sure turns the heads of other shooters when it goes off under the covered firing line.

You're 35-06 DOES sound like a handful, but I'm sure it's a great barrel! I'll look forward to seeing your 6.5 M-D load workups as you get time to do them - I'm really getting an itch in that direction!
