Looking to get a Montana sling. Don't know if a 1 1/2 would look/feel better than a 1". What is your opinion?

Correction.. Make that a 1 1/4" sling, not a 1 1/2.

Let me give you a recommendation if you plan on humping the mountains - forget about looks and focus on functionality.

I've quit using anything but stretchy, synthetic slings as they are MUCH easier on the shoulder and the good ones don't slip. And yes, wider is better.

Are you looking for a sling to carry the rifle on your shoulder? Or a sling to help steady yourself while shooting?

A 1 1/4" sling is easier on my shoulder. I like synthetic slings with something that grips the shoulder.

I like a sling that has almost no strap at the top. The shorter the distance from the rifle's forearm to the part that sits in my shoulder, the better. You only use the top few inches of a sling to carry the rifle and keep the sling on your shoulder. I take my slings to a shoe shop or kite surfing shop and have them stitch the strap to the swivel piece. This eliminates the D-ring, shortens the top of the strap, and guarantee that it will not work free and drop a rifle.

My choice in slings is 1" leather. I really like the Brownell's Latigo Sling for both carry and as a tight sling for shooting.

I have not tried 1 1/2" slings since boot camp. When I am hunting I want the rifle in my hands, not on my shoulder. When hiking in the dark or hauling meat it really doesn't matter. Leather grips my shoulder better than nylon. Anything with padding or a Cobra profile is excess. Just MHO.

I usually make my own out of nylon strap you can find in hardware stores. I want them light and supple because most of the time they are rolled up in my fanny pack.

I don't really like the 1 1/4" slings. I prefer leather 1" slings. I hate any kind of cobra style. The Montana sling & the Marlin factory slings are favorites.

I vote for the wider ones, synthetic, with the anti-slip pad. Much more comfortable to me, and stays on my shulder better. I also like the swivel attachments (I believe they are "Quake" or "Hush") as they don't chew up my stock at the base of the swivel stud like the old UncleMikes style used to with a short stud.

Glad you posted this thread - reminds me to get rid of all my old leather slings and thin nylon slings. I stopped using them years ago.

I think most here are confusing a carrying strap to a sling. The carrying strap is just that a device to carry the rifle, a sling is for support while shooting a rifle. My $.02.

I don't think there is any confusion Steve. Yes, certain styles of slings are used for shooting and carrying, and certain types are used exlusively for carrying. The term is used commonly for both types.

Hello all. I think the best sling ever made was the ones that were shipped with Rem. 700 BDL's years ago; I still buy every one I see at gun shows. I just measured one, they come in at a little under 3/4" which to me makes a very light yet still functional strap. The narrower sling seems to 'dig in' against clothing a lot better and the last thing I want is constantly adjusting my rifle. I tried the nylon slings and slippage was a real problem so I quickly gave up on them. And I also do not like the Cobra style slings or ones w/padding; just added weight to carry. Kix

Guess I’m definitely in the minority here. As the say…to each there own…I could care less how it looks I only care about how it works. My choice is a 1” leather sling, cobra profile, with an anti-slip pad...I string the sling backwards for barrel down carry; i.e., narrow strap at fore end and cobra profile at butt end...right handed with left shoulder carry.

This carry manner with left hand pre looped through sling and grasping fore end allows me to keep as much tension on rifle as needed for safe carry as well as ease of swinging barrel out of way of obstructions while maintaining the shoulder carry. A quick-slight lift up, kick left elbow out while bringing rifle into firing position affords me a quick sling support for steady shooting. With a little practice one can move from shoulder carry to ready/fire position almost as fast as from a ready carry position.

I’m only 5’10” tall and this carry manner works well for me with both 24” and 26” barrel length bolt guns. Anyway…my 2-cents.

Well, that 1/4" is going to be a 20% surface area increase, which equals a 20% drop in psi on your shoulder.

All but the lighest of my rifles wear 1 1/4" military slings.
they hold on to your shoulder a little better and are more comfortable if you sling it across your chest to drag or help drag out a critter.

In the Army we always just carry the darn thing at the combat ready. Try carrying it. It's not much fun the first time, but you get used to it after a while (like the ruck and body armor).

I was on a drive here in Northern Ca and was my first time hunting the area. Friends played a trick on me and gave me a line to walk that had a 70 foot rock face at the end of it. Sling came in handy to climb the rock. Suprised them when they saw me top the rock.
