Winchester 100 repair ?
« on: January 01, 2009, 12:33:39 PM »
Is there any gunsmith out there that can fix a Winchester 100. I have a beauty, very accurate. BUT, it fails to eject cases extractor rides over rim of case . I've had it to 3 smiths so far and no luck. Please help,I want to use and hunt with the rifle. About to go crazy trying to figure it out and  have tried every suggestion made so far. I don"t want to give up on this rifle, but the $ are about to run out trying to get it to work.

I thought you had finally got that one fixed Country Boy? In a previous post you were all happy about it finally working properly:

You are absoutley correct. But after more shooting, it became erratic in ejectioning cases again. So I'm still fighting with it. It shoots so good I hate to give up on it. I won"t hunt with a rifle that isn"t 100 % reliable.
I have the worst luck with rifles. I bought a new Ruger Hawkeye and discovered there were several cracks  running through the stock by the rear trigger guard. Ruger picked it up about an hour ago ( ups I haven't got to shoot the rifle yet !)
All your help is greatly appreciated.   :(

In the post the link took me to you mentioned 800 rounds with no problems then the ejection problems began again.. I would be that the issue is connected to a cleaning issue. These are autoloaders and can be a little finicky about being cleaned, and the chamber needs special attention to keep it working smoothly.
try a chamber brush to remove fouling and brass buildup in the chamber..bet it helps.

I never owned a M100 but worked on one for a buddy.  The gas piston was stuck and you can't take the action out of the stock until the bolt will open.  With lots of penetrating oil we finally got it apart. I would follow Gunnut's advice and make sure the gas piston is clean because it is a real pain if the bolt ever sticks shut.  I suspect poor extraction would be a predecessor to a seized gas piston.

I had one with the same problem after several years of frustration I gave it away. About a week later my friend showed up with the rifle and told me to shoot it. I did with no problems. I asked what he did to it and he replied "It was the gas piston was gunked up and I just cleaned it."

I still see him and the gun is still working great. He says he makes sure the piston is clean after every shooting session.

Hope that helps.

The smith called me yesterday and thinks he may have found the problem. He says the extractor has a small hairlines crack that expands when shot much and then fails to pull the cases out. The gas system and chamber are fine and this baby really shoots. When I get it back, I will take some pictures and try to figure out how to post them. I've never seen a 100 with this type of factory pattern.
