I used to run a Collins Station and Hellecrafter, and Hammerlund gear mostly on CW and it was good equipment I guess I liked it because the old tub equipment I understood and could fix them.
Didn't have to many problems with lightning, but they don't hold a candle to the new solid state when it comes to the receivers with the notch filters and noise blanking these new rigs have now days.
I was working the 160 mtr cw band one night using the Rombic running split on the Yaesu 840 and I picked up a faint ZL so I switched between the Yaesu and the Hellecrafter receiver and I could not pick him out on the Hellecrafter.
This guy was running a QRP exciter 150 milliwatts that was good enough for me to confirm it for him.
