I have a reamer and have made a few H&R barrels with it.  It is great fun, shoots like a 32-20, or a little hotter, and you can load it up with heavy cast bullets and go sub-sonic if you have a fast enough twist barre.  Have at it, they are great!  Larry

cheaper ammo and gun

I love my M1 carbine. I sold my Mini-14 after I got the M1. The Ruger just never got shot much anymore.

It's not very accurate and not very powerful, but it's light and a heck of a fun plinker if you want something a step up in power from a 10-22, and a step down from something in .223.

In my opinion though, they're not worth the prices they go for these days...

an excellent home defence weapon.
the short rounded profile of the 110 grain bullet
does strange things to flesh on impact. It creates
a wound that a 110 grain bullet at 1900 fps
should not be creating. mine are plenty accurate for their intended
purpose and there is virtually no recoil. True that a Hi-point is handy
but I would in no way put it in the same class as an M1.

SS x 3

The 30 carbine at the muzzle per Remington balistics has 967 ft/lbs of energy. The maximum energy of the 357 magnum per Remington is 610 ft/lbs. I have one and enjoy it very much. My point is that the little 30 is under rated.

And, at a full 100 yards, the .30 carbine still has about 550 ft pounds of energy, the equivalent of a standard 158 grain .357 round coming out of revolver with a 4 inch barrel at point blank range.  And at 200 yards, the .30 carbine still retains about 350 foot pounds, approximately the same as a 9mm fired from pistol at point blank range.

None of this adds up to much if you use the full metal jacket military ammo, but using standard factory softpoint ammo, it is quite deadly

Someone mentioned a 9mm high point carbine, which is an interesting combo, but does not come close to the foot pounds of the .30 carbine.  A 9mm carbine is at best a 50 to 75 yard weapon.  The M-1 has far greater effective range.
