300 Win Mag loads
« on: September 05, 2007, 06:00:43 PM »
I just acquired a 300 Win Mag. What are the best powders for this gun using 150 - 165 gr bullets?

It's been a while since loading for this cartridge, but it seems like I used IMR4350 for lighter bullets and H4831 for the heavier ones.

In addition to the above listed powders including all the versions of 4350, I REALLY like IMR 4831 for 165 and 180 gr loads.  I'm just trying them but you might want to check out Alliant R19 and R22 as several load manuals show great performance with these powders.

Its an older powder but I'm having great results with H450 and 180 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips.

There are a lot of suitable powders out there.  Seems like Rifle or Handloader Magazine had an article about the 300 Win recently - don't remember the month.

Good luck.  Check out a few manuals and you should find some good recipes.

I have a Rem 700 with a Hart barrel. I use Hornady Interbond and Barnes XBT, both in 165 grain bullets. 77.5 grains Reloader 22. 2 1/2 inches high at 100 yards, and deadon at 300 yards.

Please don't do this without caution but I hunted for years with a fellow who reloaded his 300Win buy scooping up a full case of 4831 and seating a 150 gr bullet on top.  He killed lots of game and was an excellent long range shot.  Don;t know if his rifle held together or not.
