Now I've gone and done it! Savage 219
« on: February 25, 2009, 03:37:22 PM »
I've gotten quite attached to this one.Despite excess headspace and hard to use sights, I find myself wanting to make themost of her.I went out today with some reloads , a 150 Winchester Power Point over 37gr of BLC2 lit with CCI200's and got some really gratifing results. 3 rounders at 50 yards were right around an inch for 3 shots but were distinctly vertically strung.Horizontal dispersion was right around 1/2 inch for 10 shots , but the vertical was 1 7/8 inch. It might be sight related though as the semi buckhorn rear sight and fine bead make for a difficult sight picture.I'm considering an all steel aperture rear sight and a stock refinish. I was thinking of a Handi-Rifle , but this little Savage has really made an impression.Always wanted a 26 inch .30-30...

You might try a CCI 250 (magnum) primer with your load of BLC2. BLC2 is a ball powder and some times takes a little stronger spark to ignite with consistency. Your vertical dispersion usually indicates an inconsistency of velocity. Some times reducing powder or increasing powder charges helps out vertical dispersion. But a simple primer change could fix it for you too. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

Thanks for that suggestion Otto. I have been getting vertical stringing with mild loads of BLC2 in my 243. I will try out the mag primers tomarow.

LaO always has some good advice. But just to help "muddy up the water", I was reading one of my many gun rags that I subscribe to....and they had an article about how you should shoot from a bench.

Well, other than the usual "Don't lay your barrel on the front rest "dummy" lay the forend on it" kind of stuff" they had some really good information in the article. One of the items they mentioned about vertical stringing was using a rear sand-bag. They said if you do use a rear sand bag (which I do all the time) and you find yourself "pinching" the bag with your "free hand" (in my case that would be my left hand as I am a right handed shooter) you may find that your shots will tend to string vertically. This is because when you pull the trigger, your left hand may not keep the same tension on the bag, and the gun will shift slightly, causing the slight vertical string.

So.....to "fix" this, when you set up, make sure the rear of your gun is SOLID on the bag.....or use a holder such as the Lead Sled or one of those "Wrap Bag" type of gun rest.

FWIW.
