22-250 vs 220 swift
« on: October 26, 2007, 05:44:04 PM »
if you were to choose between the two?  No factory fodder, it will all consist of home brewed reloads.   Single shot rifle.  Would not have to worry about over heating.

What would you choose?

I have both and believe everyone else should also, but in all honesty if you're only going to have one the 22-250 is the logical choice for a lot of reasons not the least of which is readily available brass.  My 22-250 is much less tempermental even though it does prefer loads on the hotter side.  The slightest variables make a huge difference in the Swift.  If you like a challenge the Swift may be the way to go.

I'd go with the swift. First of all if you want 22-250 load speeds you can, but you also have the option of some really fast loads to. My grandpa has a swift and he has no negative comments about it at all, also its a old Winchester model 70 with the original barrel and it shoots great. I'd go with the swift. ;)

I would go with the Swift.
If I did not reload it would be easily the 22-250

The 22-250 has many advantages over the swift except one big one. Speed. THats why I chose the 220 swift and haven't looked back. I'm a reloader so availability of factory loads is a non issue with me and I have not found it to be tempramentle to load for.

The 22-250 Shooting the 55 gr bullet HP. I don't push it much past 3600 FPS but could do alot more FPS.

Thats my thoughts on it. 8)

I like them both but the Swift is my “go to rifle” for a long shot.

I have no “white hot passion” about one over the other (if they stop making Swift brass, so be it). The Swift is top dog though, but that doesn’t make it the best choice for everyone. If you don’t reload, then forget the Swift and go with the 22-250.

The Swift is slightly faster than the 22=250.  And the key word is slightly.  Most of the dramatic claims you hear are simply that, claims.  That said, you can't go wrong with either.  With the Swift, you would have something that is a little "different", not something you can pick off the wall at just about any gun shop.  Kinda like shooting a .257AI as opposed to a .257.
Your gains in velocity and reach will be minor and success will be based more on your rifle shooting ability than any difference between the two.

If you are concerned about velocity then you should be looking at a 223 WSSM. That said 22-250 is easier to find commercial ammo for (varmit packs in Walmart) - brass for reloading is less expensive and more plentiful. However often the Swift's you find are in some excellent rifles that may overshadow the rationale thought process - a pre model '64, Ruger #1 with outstanding wood or an old Sako can be pretty tempting.

;) I have used the .22-250 since it was a wildcat. I like it and have several including and Improved. My favorite is now on its 3rd barrel. I suppose it is about a 1/3 used up. I have one Swift at present. It is a rebarreled 700. It shoot like a dream. :o From the day I had it put together, it was a coyote killer from the first shot. Lately I have been using the 22-250 AI, but it is because the bore is worn, I would prefer to finish it and get it rebarreled in the next few years. With barrels of the same lenght, I see less difference between the two cartridges.  However, had I know years ago, I could rebarrel a std. 700 to the Swift, I doubt I would have so many .22-250's and I know I would have picked the Swift over the .22-250. For me it is a winner from the first shot. ;)

I say 22-250.
With the modern powders you can get the 22-250 to do 99% of what the 220 swift can do with less powder.
Less powder and the same speed = less recoil and wear and tear on you and the equipment no matter how small of an effect.

I say two-year-old thread - I'm sure the OP's decision was made a long time ago.

Still a good topic though.
I believe that some of the early Swift factory loadings were with a 38gr bullet and you would get those scorching velocity's.
With bullet's in the 53gr-55gr range though, it just becomes "slightly faster" than the .22-250
