IMR4350 in 45/70
« on: February 14, 2009, 08:42:26 PM »
I have a 20+ year old tin of IMR4350. I would like to try it in my H&R 45/70. I found a load on Reloaders Nest (7012) of XXXX with a 405gn projectile for 1555 fps. Has any one else tried this load. I am looking for a Trapdoor level load.- Pete

Just at a glance that powder appears as unlikely as can be to get a useful load of any level for the 45-70 particularly in Trapdoor pressure. None of my loading manuals list 4350 in any 45-70 application.

I dont expect it to be ideal or efficient, as long as its safe and reasonably accurate. - Pete

Even though it is considered too slow, IMR4350 will work in the 45-70.  However, I'd think about a magnum rifle primer if you are going to use loads that don't fill up the case.  I doubt one can get enough uncompressed powder in the case to do any harm.

Don't go there with a trapdoor.
A slow powder can be just a dangerous as one to fast.
Stick with a powder that the powder manufactures list in there manuals.

Just because you have read that someone on some forum / site did something once does NOT make it safe to do , that is why we ALL should stick with published data from either the powder or bullet companies that have the people and equipment to properly test these loads .
