New slug gun
« on: February 13, 2009, 04:14:06 AM »
Just bought my first shotgun last night.  A mossberg 535 combo slug/bird barrel.  A am new to shotguns overall, and was wondering what/where are the cheapest sabot slugs out there so I can sight in and get used to firing a shotgun.

A little background...I came from a state where I hunted with rifles most of my life and never really got into shotguns much except for a few turkey trips.

Any info at all will be helpful.

Thanks!

If the barrel is a smoothbore i'd go to wallmart and buy the winchester or the remington rifled slugs and give them a try

You are not going to find a sabotted slug for much less than $2 each.

This is assuming that you are putting a scope on it.  If you want to save money while sighting it in, try the fiochi dangerous game slug and once you have it the best you can get with them then move up to the sabotted slug.  Fiochi's are around $8 for a box of 10.

Keep in mind that your slug gun will be finicky on which speed/weight of slug it likes best.  You will need to go buy several boxes of different speeds and weights to find out which it likes best.  There is no cheap way around it if you really want to know what is going to perform the best in your slug gun.  You can't just say, I like the performance of the hornadays so I am going to use them and expect to get good results.  Let your gun tell you what it likes best.

When I was trying to determine what worked best out of my 870 with a hastings barrel, I purchased a box of 3 inch lightfield commanders, 2 3/4 lightfield hybrids,  2 3/4 hastings magnums, and 3 inch hornadays.  At 50 yds, the commanders and hornadays were all over the place.  The hybrids were grouping at about 1 inch and the hastings were ripping one big hole.  I bought more hastings and shot at 100 yds and was getting 2 inch groups, sometimes better.

It still won't hurt to buy a box of cheap foster-type slugs in Rem,Win, and Fed. You may find they have accuracy that is acceptable for shots up to 100-150 yds out of your gun. I had 835's and 500's both rifled and smoothbore. My 835 with rifled bbl didn't show enough accuracy difference between sabots and fosters to warrant the extra cost, especially when most of our shooting was on deer drives.

Another thing to remember when shooting a slug gun, in case you did not know, you have to use what some refer to as a hard hold.  You need to grip the forearm firmly and pull down.  You don't want to just rest the forearm on your hand or whatever you are using to shoot off of.  The reason for this is that the slug is moving so slowly out the barrel that the gun begins to recoil before the slug has left the barrel and will jump and throw off your slug.

Cheap slugs are great for getting used to shooting your slug gun.  I agree with hunt-m-up.  Buy all the cheap slugs you can and try them out.  I still highly recommend the fiochi's.  You will probably have to mail order them but they are actually as cheap or even cheaper in some cases than the foster type slugs and I think they perform better.  You should also check out the brenneke KO's.  They did not work well in mine but they may perform great out of yours.  They are about the same price as the fosters as well but you may have to mail order them also.

Tarhunt.com will explain how to shoot a slug gun . it is a good read and short . I started using the lightfield slug after reading it ( in a savage 210 ) they are great . My sons gun ( same model ) likes winchester better . A 20 ga rem. 870 likes rem. slugs better .
Learn to shoot a slug gun ( not like a rifle ) then find a slug.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
