THE CHARGE

THE CHARGE

By the 1890's our Confederate Forefathers, The United Confederate Veterans, were getting on in years. They began to look at how to best preserve the legacy of the Cause for which they had fought. To accomplish this honorable goal they established an organization for their descendants - the Sons of Confederate Veterans - in 1896. In 1906 the men in gray left to this organization an edict, that is today called "The Charge."

These men had the foresight to know that their history would be wrongfully "written" by the victors of the bloodiest war in American history. Even back then, during their own lifetimes, they saw the way it was already being portrayed as something other than the truth. If their descendants were to ever know that truth, they Had to create a way to deliver it to the unborn generations in an organized fashion, to preserve that truth beyond any measure of falsehood that would most certainly be created by the victors. The Sons of Confederate Veterans is the delivery method of that truth...

Commission to the Sons of Confederate Veterans by
Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee

"To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish. Are you also ready to die for your country? Is your life worthy to be remembered along with theirs? Do you choose for yourself this greatness of soul?

"Not in the clamor of the crowded street,
Not in the shouts and the plaudits of the throng,
But in ourselves are triumph and defeat."

Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee
New Orleans, LA - April 25, 1906

[NOTE] There are three versions of The Charge. Any one of the three is universally accepted.

I believe that these southern gentlemen had to make the same choice that we are talking about now, States rights vs. a domineering Federal Government. If it goes that far again I hope the outcome is different.

What is the skinny on reinactments?  We will be making a tour up the eastern seaboard this spring, and the focus of the trip will be the history of the Civil and Revolutionary wars. Is there a place I can go to find a schedule?

bilmac, the Battle of Aiken (S.C.) is always in February, and is the largest reenactment of all (other than Gettysburg). It was the last major battle of the "Civil War". (It was a Southern victory) Movie studious are always there to film the battle for stock footage. It is truly a sight to behold. The battles everywhere are always held on Saturday and Sunday.

Usually a week later, the Battle of Broxton Bridge (also S.C.), near Allendale, is smaller but well worth the trek to see it, as the terrain is completely different. Broxton Bridge Plantation was the sight of the original battle and they host it every year, on the part of the plantation where the battle actually took place.

The Battle of Manassas, (Ga.) is TODAY, and I'm on my way there in just a bit! ;D It is near Manassas, Ga. and is a bit smaller but it is growing in popularity each year.
The next battle I know of is near Macon, Ga. and I believe it is in May or June. Then there's one near Atlanta.
I will get a schedule for the remainder of '09 and try to get one for 2010 and either post it here or send it to you by PM.

Hope this helps. It gives several, but leaves off several. I'll try to find more. Enjoy! :D :D

FireStrut, what made you leave?

The members over time had lost interest and started to get out. I think a camp has to have seven members to keep a camp open and we got down to four and decided to close the camp. But the camp was going on six years before I joined. In that ten years my camp placed over 100 Confederate grave markers and I was a reenactor in the 16th Alabama Infantry, Cleburne's and the Yellowhammer Rifles.

Wow, guys this is great. Sorry but I've been under the weather and haven't been on. SBG can you tell us the difference in the 3  "The Charge"s?
