32-20 Recommendations

Hey Veral

I have just picked up an old Win 92 in 32-20 made in about 1918. Dont know the twist or throat measurements yet. Waiting for some brass to make a chamber mold with. Do you have any thoughts on this cartridge? Not really looking to load it heavy as I have a 32-40 and desires for a 32 special. A small game gun and plinking gun are my plans. What wt bullet do you recommend? Gas check or no? I have read some folks load 32-20 over 2000 fps but easily in the 1600-1800 range.
Most men wil blink an eye or take a breath before pulling the trigger, I won;t

Those velocities are realistic with my 115 gr FN with gas check, but cases will stretch exactly the amount of headspace when running high pressure loads.  That can mean extremely short case life.  Three shots with my marlin before I tightened the headspace to a light touch on the ctg rim, then I could load one case hot for 50 rounds with no change in the case.
If your bore is cloudy or pitted don't even look at plainbase bullets.  and plan on lapping it with the LBT lap kit.  For just small game use, with velocities to 1600 fps or maybe a bit higher, plainbase will work fine and make shooting a lot cheaper,  if the barrel is real smooth.
