30-30 not bad
« on: August 25, 2003, 04:27:15 AM »
I finally had time to take the 30-30 10" to the range yesterday.I have been working up some loads and shooting them at my house but can't shoot over 45 yard target.I set up 100 yard  and 125 yard targets the thing really surprised me.I could get 1/2 - 3/4 inch groups at home and it still kept them under 1 1/2" at 100 and 125.I know this is not a tack driver but it will work very well on whitetail this fall.I'm using a 150 grain bullet over R#7 looks pretty good.

I would think the 30-30 would be excellent.  I really liked my 7-30 waters.   If you like the more "meat and potatoes" caliber, the 30-30 will fit you just fine. . . problem is that after the meat and potatoes you will eventually want some dessert.  Then comes another barrel in a more "exotic" caliber.   Have fun and by the way, good shooting.

good shooting 8)  if you want to experiment a little, imr4198 and 125-135gr single shot pistol bullets will give some good performance, and may get better expansion than the 150's in the short barrel.

Thanks for reply guys.I have two 7-30 waters barrels that i will never sale. The 7-30 was my 2nd barrel (223 rem 1st) i bought back in 1991.I think i have 18 barrels now not a big collection but it covers everything for me.I have tried the 125 grballistic tip and 130 ssp hornady they work well but i shoot them in the 30 herrett .I bought the 30-30 for bigger bullets(and ED had one cheap) and the 150 gr are working good.

That's very encouraging, I plan on getting a 10" 30-30, and I'm planning on how to get both performance and accuracy out of the short barrel.  As you probably already know, the 30 Herret was created because Steve Herret, Bob Milek, and many other handgun hunting pioneers were very unsatisfied with every attempt they made to get performance and accuracy from the 30-30 in such a short barrel.

I know these guys were pros, and I don't want to seem cocky, but I really think I can do it, and now you tell me you are doing it.

The problem back then was that  the usual 30-30 loads spit out all the burning powder right in the middle of the pressure curve, thus destroying both performance and accuracy.  When they switched to faster powder, they got decent performance, but still poor accuracy do to the low charge volume causing inconsistent ignition.

But they had some powders back then that still should have worked, like RE-7 and IMR-4198.  But now we have powders that are even better for this purpose.  Like AA-2015, a benchrest powder that's plenty fast, burns easily, and gives plenty of performance.  Better yet there's XMP-5744, a rifle powder so fast that it's almost a pistol powder.  This stuff lights consistent no matter how it's laying in the case, even when there's lots of air space in the case.  I have done plenty of accuracy and chronograph work with both of these powders in a 14" barreled 308 lone eagle, and they lacked nothing.  I don't see how they can fail me in the 10" 30-30 Contender.  I'll write about here then.

I'd like to know how much RE-7 you are using with the 150's.

Thanks for the boost
