Author Topic: Why are the barrels on here the same price as getting from the factory (Read 1369 times)

Hello

I am new to the forum and a new Handi owner. I am looking for a 308 barrel but I don't understand I believe I can get one from the factory for almost the same price as guys are selling them on here and I assume they may have to fit them after they get them compared to the factory fitting it exactly. Am I missing something?

Largely because people would rather fit their own barrels rather than be without their frame for however long it takes to get it back with a new barrel. Another reason is that some barrels are only available in the secondary market.

1. don't have to wait a few weeks to several months.
2. don't have to pay shipping.
3. don't have to pay $60.00 for fitting, proofing ect.

Hmmm, that's a new one for me. So, if I send a Handi to the factory for a new barrel, thinking it's a killer deal based on the prices on their chart, I have another $60 to pay on top of that? Is that per barrel?

The only fees on the order form are $15 fitting per barrel and $15 shipper per order.

DP, you're the only one that I recollect that has reported being charged the proofing fee, and I thought you got an adjustment after the fact. db22 just got a barrel fitted, I PMd him to see if he was charged for it, if they were charging it regularly, I would expect everyone to mention it as it adds considerably to the cost of a barrel. $:-\$

Db22 was only charged sales tax on top of the $15 normal fitting and $15 shipping fee, no other charges.

Yeah......but what TommyT didn't tell ya is for every factory barrel you buy....they throw in a motorcycle just like the one he has in his avatar! And....it's included in the $15 shipping cost!

Cool! I guess this wheel squeeked enough to get things changed? Yes, after 3 weeks and 5 phone calls I did get extra charges dropped. I seem to remember a couple of other guys getting charged the extra $30.00 for the other 2 fees, but I may be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time, nor the last I'm afraid.

Hasn't made me want to get rid of the Lil' Handi's that's for sure. I still look at em and really am thinking of getting a couple more from my favorite "Candy" store. They have a 44 mag on an SB-2 frame and still have the 35 Whelen setting on the shelf. $:-\$ I would like to try another 45 Colt barrel to see if the chamber isn't as large as the one I have. What I really need is time to play with the ones I have now.

went i sent my frame in just before the first of this year for 2 new barrels, I was charged exactly what the sheet said. $15 per barrel fitting, $15 per firearm shipping. The only thing that was added was the sales tax

Do you want it now or do you want to roll the dice. If you send it to Ilion you are in for at least 5 or 6 weeks minimun and maybe many month of waiting.

Depends on what you order and whether or not it's in stock. Don't bother calling customer service to check availability. Either they don't know what's going on, don't care to check, or out and out lie about what's available. See my post below. Click the link.

Bottom line is if you want it in a reasonable time buy a used one and fit it yourself. Or better yet buy another rifle in the caliber you want.

$10 for me, I only send the frame and order a stock set since I only have complete rifles.

I called about a week ago because I was thinking of getting the 357 barrel. Was told shipping was 18 dollars and they only take credit cards now. I read the Ilion poll and still havenot decided if I want to send the gun or not.

You also will have to rework your trigger if they put it back to factory specs... If you ask, they can give you a gritty trigger with about 9 pound of pull. This should increase your trigger finger muscles... I have shot my handi so much I can't get a glove on my right hand because of the bulging muscle on my trigger finger. The other reason to buy a barrel that has been shot is it probably has been broken in. This will save you 50 to 100 rounds of ammo to get the barrel to shoot good. Handi rifles are like fine Italian sports cars - you are always tinkering with them.

Actually, I was charged the $15 proofing fee and and the $15 testing fee too. At the time, I thought someone else also got charged for one but not the other, but my memory may be fuzzy on that. Anyhow, that was immediately after the move to the new factory. It is certainly possible that they have stopped making those charges after all the complaints they got.

From my point of reference, the resale price is not worth it for me to let a barrel go. I would rather let it collect dust with the thought that it may get me excited some time in the future than to net about $100 just to someday have to go thru the trouble of sending in for it again if my desire returns. I dont fit my own, so the personal investment involved with assembling the collection of fitted barrels has a price tag and I doubt many are willing to pay that price, probably would be insulting if I asked for it.

For example, I have a 44mag I have little desire to shoot, would rather use the little brother 357max or the big brother 45-70.

I have a 25-06, would rather have this one in a savage switch barrel for a bolt action.

I have a 223 that just seems useless for me - but it is a good shooter. I dont load for this one so I dont study it much to get fired up about it.
