Harris BIPOD beyond barrel end?

I was wondering if anyone has ever mounted a Harris Bipod where the legs were beyond the end of the barrel when folded up? I am working on a new forend and with my model of Harris Bipod, I can only go 1.5 inches further forward before the legs pass the barrel. Anyone think that heat might be an issue for the rubber feet on this thing?

I would like to move my bipod forard a total of 3 inches , thus having the feet, 1.5 inches ahead of the muzzle. Not sure if the heat would be an issue or if it is such a quick flash that it would not damage the rubber.

I have mounted them beyond the muzzle and found no ill effects. BUT - I have not done a lot of shooting this way or done it on guns that would have a large muzzle flash. When I have one of mine mounted, I use it in the down position and when I have it rested on a bench, I take it off. So I have only shot a few off hand shots with the feet sticking beyond the muzzle. I could be wrong, but I would think that the very brief moment of muzzle flash would not heat up the rubber enough to do any damage. Remember that it is the friction of the powder going through a throat that cause most of the heat build up in a barrel, not the fire...so the same would apply to the muzzle. You could shoot a couple of rounds in a row and the feel the rubber. If it is hot, then damage could occur, if it is cool to the touch, then it more than likely will do no harm. I don't see heat as a problem but the muzzle blast might send any loose parts downrange. Years ago we used to shoot on a powerline using the car roof as a rest. The roof never got hot nor was the paint scorched. When one of my buddies used his car with a vinyl top the top got a 6 inch rip with the first shot.

I never thought of the muzzle blast. Hehe, it would be a good durability test for the Harris pod though!

Whatever you do be careful not to grab the bi-pod out there.  A very good friend of mine had a short TC in 223 with that set up, and got out to far and the concussion of the blast took the top part of his middle finger knuckle off.  He didn''t loose it, but it's locked now and can't be straightened or bent more than it is.  DP

The caliber hasn't been stated, and I think that would have a bit to do with it.  As previously stated, heat shouldn't be an issue in a single shot rifle.  A semi-auto might be a different story.
