ammo question for the yotes in the A M
« on: March 07, 2009, 03:55:02 PM »
Ok I cant remember wich I sighted in with for my .243 factory 100 gr federals or factory 100 gr winchesters. If memory serves me correctly both shot excellent in my rifle. The question I have is after looking at many of each brand why are the federals a touch shorter than the winchesters by almost an 1/8th inch. The fed's are soft point and the win's are power points. A person would think that since they are both 100 gr rounds that both would be shaped the same I mean there is only so much material to add up to 100 gr. When it comes to the reloading world and different bullets im lost the only thing I know is some of their names im not familiar with the size and all before they go into the case. The only time I see them out of the case is if I happen to find one after the shot and they darn sure dont look like they did before. My only quess is different material makeup more lead less lead more copper less copper and so on.

Well since the bullet is made up of both copper and lead and they do not weigh the same,  If you have pulled both and one is longer than the other i would say the longer may have more copper in the jacket than the other.  Same reason why the barns bullets are longer than the same weight in a given caliber even boat tails.  OH yea a boat tail will add length.
If you are talking about loaded length one could just be seated lower.  it also could be the angle to the point.  the rounder the point the shorter.

so as long as they are the same diameter it doesnt really matter how long they are they will both seat in the chamber the same and all will be ok. yea I know im asking this ? after the fact since I have shot both out of the gun but after seing that i got a little nervous thinking I might have messed up the barrel.

From reading your post, I would say you are fine. If I understand correctly... Assuming your speaking of OAL, not actual projectile length.

If the federals are premium line ammo, they like to turn a cannalure and crimp in the bullets. They also tend to run the OAL shorter then other makes.

If your sure your memory is correct, dont fret on it. Have fun with the song dogs and report in, when you get home!!

they are just power shok's and yes the over all lenght is my issue. I as we all know the case are the same between the feds and the wins since all .243 win are just .308 necked down and many more. But yes the lenght of the bullet sticking out of the case is longer on the winchester super x power point. I have always used winchester and was a very loyal man but with ammo going nuts i can still pick up federal .243's for 13.50 a box I had to give them a shot bought five boxes. I just cant remember what i sighted in with originally because I do know that even in the same grain different types of ammo can shoot different.

If you look closely you will see that they are shaped slightly different. Even slight differences in angles in the nose make the total length of bullets that are the same weight longer or shorter. Then some bullets have a small flat point. As mentioned a boat tail which is a an angled base also makes a bullet longer.
