H&R 676 or 686
« on: September 21, 2009, 11:37:21 AM »
Been looking at some old revolvers made by H&R.  I have several of the single shot rifles and am thinking it would be cool to have a revolver or two.  I currently don't have a 22 mag so that is where I would like to start.  Anyone have any experience with these good or bad.  Thanks.  :)

Have shot the 22 version a few times and my buddy liked how I kept my Bisley in the garage with the 22 Colibri rounds in it and would shoot pests like Mice in the garage with it.
He now keeps his the same way and we end up in back yard shooting matches with soda cans.
I think the 22LR would be more versitle for a first revolver.  The non to the Mag for larger small game like Racoon and coyote.  But a good 22LR will do those too.
I am curious about the Handle.
Where did you come up with the Weatherman68?  It makes me think of the weather underground terrorists. >:(

I enlisted in the Air Force in 1968 and my job was a weather observer.  We aided the forcasters by plotting maps etc.  Today the job I had is all done by computers but it was great duty and I learned alot.

Weatherman68,
I have 8 different H&R 22/22mag convertibles. So, yes, I have a little experience with them.
Model 686's, I have one of every barrel length ever offered, 4,5",5.5", 7.5",10", and 12".
All made in 1980, except the 10" which wasn't offered until 1982.
Also 2 model 649's 5.5" and 7.5". the only 2 barrel lengths offered. Also both made 1980
1 model 650, 5.5" only barrel length offered. Same as the 649 except nickel finish. also manufactured in 1980
The 686's were the last offerings, and the best of the bunch. Fully adjustable rear sight, target style ramp front sight. Beautiful, color case hardening frame.
Excellent shooters, I feel that mine all shoot slightly better with the magnum ammo, than the lr's. I have never locked them down in a rest to really test the accuracy.
The model 686 was the new improved model 676. With the better sights. 1980 was the first year for the model 686, and the last year the 676 was offered.
Model 649
Blued revolver, windage adjustable only rear sight, cowboy style blade front sight. still a real good shooter.
Model 650 same as 649 but nickel.
I will put the fit and finish, function, and accuracy up against any ruger single six. Plus you have the option of shooting double action, which does not exist with the Ruger.
Great Revolvers all the way around!!!
Jim
Model 686 4.5"

Model 686 5.5"

Model 686 7.5"

Model 686 10"

Model 686 12"

 ;D  COOOLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing the pix.  Looks like I will have to sart looking in ernest for one of these.  I passed one of these up seveal months ago because I didn't know if the asking price was reasonable or not. Seems to me that at the time I thought t it was too much.  They fall into the category of being old enough to be a collecters item but they are too new to purchase them with a CR license.

weatherman68,
FYI,
Here are the prices I paid for my convertibles.
Maybe you think I went too high, but, I was willing to pay a premium to get all these pieces manufactured in the same year. Also, they all were in like new condition, with original box and paperwork. Some of them were even NIB.
5.5" Model 649 $ 220 May 07
7.5" Model 649 $ 250 Sep. 07
5.5" Model 650 $ 336 May 08 ( I really wanted this one! )
4.5" Model 686 $ 299 Aug. 07 NIB
5.5" Model 686 April 07 $ 225 NIB ( probably the best buy of the bunch )
7.5" Model 686 Aug. 07 $ 225
10" Model 686 June 07 $ 225
12" Model 686 June 07  $ 297 NIB

Keep in mind if you watch the auctions, you can usually find pretty decent 686's for around $ 225.
I see the NIB or LNIB going for $ 300-350 pretty regularly lately.

Jim,
Thanks!
Depending on how you look at it.
It is either, all thanks to you, or it is all your fault!! LOL
I say it is all thanks to you.
Still hoping to add another 4" Sportsman, and the USRA single shot soon!
