Please help my son and I
« on: November 17, 2008, 11:29:40 AM »
We both have .50 cal. inline Traditions muzzle loaders. I have missed 1 deer and my son has missed 2 this season, (our first season with our new muzzle loaders). Well I found out that when we sighted them in that we were shooting out of a dirty barrel, even though I cleaned them every 2 or 3 shots. Today, before we left the woods I shot at a target 50 yards away and didn't even hit it. At the range I was 2" high at 50 and dead on at 150. Well I shot again and nailed it...... this is when it hit me that my barrel has to be dirty if I want to ever take a second shot..... SOOOOO my question.... what can we do before we hunt to "dirty" our barrels? Is there something we can buy,,, or just shoot a 50 grain pellet charge???? that's loud though... Please help us two rookies out....

Respectfully,
Me and My Son...

Need More information , sound like the dirty barrel is tightening up in bore what ever you are shooting.

You are on the right track.  Consistency is the primary requirement for accuracy.  I think, you need to concentrate more on firing the gun with a clean barrel for hunting.   Another thing I noticed as well, is barrel drift.  As a barrel heats up, it hits a different point, this is often just from the natural stresses bending the steel ever so slightly as the barrel wamrs up.  In my 1884 trapdoor, the first clean shot will be 5 inches high and to the right from where it settles down to be after the 4th shot. light barrel 22 rifles do the same thing.

Anyway,  I would concentrate on giving the bore a good swabbing between shots and to not heat up the barrel.  Some guns definitely shoot one way clean and another dirty.    At target matches, folks often shoot one or two fouling shots before shooting for score, and they swab the barrel between every shot.  Measure the powder the same each time, pour the powder the same every time, if using loose powder, rap the heel of your palm against the side of the barrel two or three times to settle the powder, the same every time, load the ball or bullet the same every time,  use the ram rod to seat the ball/bullet, the same every time.  If you fart before a shot, do it the same every time.   It takes some practice.  When I shoot, I swab after each shot. Two wet patches and two dry patches, then reload.

What load are you using.  Most folks starting out have the mistaken impression that if a little powder is good, more is even better.  Regardless of the Maximum loads for which guns are rated, the best acuracy generally comes from the same grains of powder as the caliber.  ie, a 50 caliber gun, start with 50 grains of powder.    The traditional wisdom was to that double the caliber was the maximum load for a gun, ie for a 50 cal, a max of 100 grains of powder.    If you are shooting bullets for whitetail, you really don't need anything more than around 80 grains.

I always shoot one in the barrel before i go out and hunt.  My group are more consistent and much tighter.  I have a cva.  The gun is kept in the grage till the hunting season is over!  Bring it in and out of the house will gather moisture in the barrel and contamimate the powder.

+1

You and your son should probably try some other sabots and/or bullets.  If the bullets from a clean and a dirty barrel fall more than about 3" apart at 100 yards some load development is in order.

My guns are sighted to put the bullet from a clean barrel on target.  They put the bullets from clean and dirty barrels within 2" of each other at 100 yards.

Can I safely assume you are talking about your barrel?

You need range time. Swab between shots allowing the barrels to cool some. Sight in on the clean barrel consept and you should not have the problem of needing a dirty or fouled barrel. While your at the range and finally have the rifle sighted in with the clean barrel you then should test where the bullet impacts on the second shot with the bore dirty. Many rifles will do at least two shots before going wild.
Also apply tape, ballon, condom, finger cot or some cling wrap to the end of the muzzle for wet weather protection and test that so you do not have to wonder what your rifles will do in that case.

Save some money and ditch the pellets. Start with 70gr. loose of your choice and work the load up from there. You should hit the sweet spot some where around 80 to 100 gr of powder.
Just carry the second shot powder in a pill bottle of some other small weather tight sealed vial, or quick loaders.

That should help ya out and trigger time is always a fun day.

I dont think you have the right bullet sabot combination. Try some different sabots with your favorite bullet and see which one groups better for you. When you find that combination your first shot out of a cleen bore will still be in the kill zone at 100yds. Or atleast it should be.

Try some other combination's. I went through this same thing but not as drastic. I shoot an Encore, and the first shot just wasnt where the next one's went..Only about an inch off at 100yds. But still off,,,and then where was it going to go oa 150? So I called the folks at 777 they told me to clean it very well after it was in storage...with Windex with Vinegar very well..And that the first bullet would be right where I pointed it..They were right on the money. So now when I check it at the range I clean it with the windex with vinegar between shots..and the problem went away. But I still think you need to work up a fine tuned load for each of the gun's . I dont know if the Windex will work on pyrodex or not . But it sure does on 777. With this method I can usually get under an inch 3 shot group at 100 yds. Good Luck Drop

Was finally able to track down my first jug of BH209.  I got the last one!  As soon as I get a newly machined breach plug for my NEF Huntsman, I'm going to give 'er a whirl.
