I was looking through some Navy records I'd photograped recently and found this listing of Dr. McLean's weapons that were actually at the Washington Navy Yard in 1881, and were tested there.  As you can see, the Navy didn't want anything to do with them.  The facing page, not shown, says the Navy returned the items to Dr. McLean shortly after the tests.
