Huck Fin gunnery
« on: February 18, 2009, 05:09:04 PM »
I'm scheming on a Boggy creek expedition around Fouk, Arkansas.  Mostly just to hunt and fish for a couple weeks livin like Huck did. Trotline, cast net, fishing pole along with sleeping and cooking gear out of a Pirogue.  Might even run into bigfoot.  For a firearm I decided on a Handy in 44 magnum with a 20 gauge barrel along too.  Probably use a 250 gr. cast bullet pushed to a mild 1200 fps so if I happen to hit a squirrel with it I will still have something to eat yet I will still have plenty of penetration for anything big like a feral hog.  Maybe I should time this for bear season if they have one in the spring.  Maybe a smoothbore 20 gauge barrel set up with sights might be the best thing, just use shot and slugs.

Darn few if any spring bear seasons in the lower 48 so I don't think I'd be planning on that one. You might need a commercial fishing license for the trotline depending on the rules there.

 Bill,

You make a good point , but we sure do have a spring turkey ;)

Camp turkey?  That just has a funny sound to it ..... But I bet it would eat good all the same .

I envy you guys.  Now that I'm all "growed up" and have a farm and animals, a wife and chores and errands to do, I can't slip away like that.  As a kid, I would grab a rod, a gun, a knife, an old G.I. mess kit, an old army trenching tool, my pup tent, bedroll, coffee pot, coffee, frying pan, a slab of bacon, salt and pepper, a roll of T.P. and disappear for a week or two in the Adirondaks.  I'd be fine with trout, bluegills, catfish, squirrels, rabbit, dandelion greens, cattail and burdock root, mushrooms and cowslip for veggies.  I miss that.  I had a classmate that was into the same thing, and we'd go together.  He'd bring his gear and chow plus a cookpot, so we were set.

No Arkansas spring bear season but I couldn't find any reason not to use a trotline.

Most States I've been in you could use a trotline up to a certain amount of hooks.  Above that, you had to have a commercial license.

Well considering I'd only need a fish or two at a time I could get away with using throw lines and easily less than 10 hooks.  The times I have done this and didn't bring a shotgun I always wished I had.  I have carried a 22 rifle on many forays and on my plate was mostly fish and beans. After the trees fill out with leaves you have to spend too much time staring into trees looking for that just so shot with a rifle. I have done some searching and this year I may just use the Trinity River area around Richland Chambers lake here in Texas. Gotta be ready for the skeeters and water Moccasins though.

Water moccasins should present no problem with a 20 gauge barrel  :P

Now the skeeters are a whole different story!!
Sounds like its going to be a blast!
Will this be a trip to public land out there??  If so let us know how it goes, that's only a couple of hours from where I live.

We have certain rights to hunt and fish on the rivers in Texas.  Meaning we can subject ourselves to chiggers, skeeters and poisenous snakes as long as we stay below the high water line and with the Trinity that can mean a lot sometimes.  I was thinking the stretch of river between 31 and 287.  Maybe spend some time fishing around the area where the outlet from Richland chambers hits the Trinity.

Some of the skeeters in the Trinity River bottoms might be bigger than some of our Mourning Doves, but i don't know if they taste as good  ;D

I especially like the way them skeeters have that special heavy duty sting when they bite you. I guess I'm lucky as skeeters don't mess with me much but my ole lady, she draws em from far away.
