South Bend Reproductions
« on: May 10, 2010, 03:21:06 PM »
Hi, Can anyone give me a reasonable estimate of what a SBR 17.5" Dahlgren barrel
is worth in today's market?  This is a 1" bore in good shape- used but not abused.
Thanks, LS

Dom, He's wanting a whole lot more than that, I think I'm gonna wait and see if one appears out of your shop in the future in GB size.  Hope springs eternal you know!

LS,
I talked to the owner of SBR recently, and he quoted the price for the Dahlgren barrel (no carriage) as $382.00; if he had them in stock, which he doesn't.

He gave the price of this carronade as $585.00, also none in stock. This same barrel sold on eBay a few weeks ago for $1,594.59.
1¼" bore, OA length approx. 20-inches, approx. weight 70 lbs.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

LS, seems you and I have a healthy interest in one of Dom's dalgrens. And yes hope does spring eternal. Just want the barrel with screw elevating mechanism. Would like to do a naval type carriage. Frank

Frank, Nice to see that I'm not alone in craving a Dom GB caliber Dahlgren, it'll make a perfect compliment to my GB Dictator. I'm trying to limit the number of calibers that I have to keep ammo for.  Plans are to mount on a front pintle barbette carriage a la Zulu, should be an interesting build if the occasion ever arises.  Dom knows there is interest out here  but for now anyway his focus is on smaller barrels.  Best Regards, LS

Do you have Round Shot and Rammers?  Good drawings in there for the Barbette.

Zulu, Don't have it but requested it today via inter library loan along with The More Complete Cannoneer.  Your illustrations while building yours show most of what I'd need, I still want to make one for my 2.25" Dom Parrott as an alternative to the field carriage already built.
