.45 super in a .45 acp barrel!!
« on: January 19, 2009, 04:21:08 AM »
I'm going to be ordering a 15" .45 acp encore barrel from midway. Yes, i know but i just had to be different!!! ;D If i wanted a bit more punch. Would there be any reason i couldn't shoot .45 supers through this barrel???? I think this barrel would be alot of fun to shoot!! Light recoil and not near as much muzzle blast as my .357 or .44 mag. It would be cheap to reload for too!!! I think it would be good treestand gun out in the middle of the timber. What do you think??

I don't' think there would be any problem. you should be able to shoot the  460 rowland also since there is no recoil spring or compensator to worry about.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk convertible with a 4 5/8" barrel in 45lc & a cylinder for 45acp.Wouldn't you be better off ordering a 454 casull barrel then you could shoot other calibers?

No, or not really. The 454, 45 colt barrels are normally .4520-.4525 in dia. The .45ACP, 45 Super, and 460 Rowland all run .4510" bullets. That being said, also the 454 and 45 colt head space on the rim, if you were to drop a .45ACP round into that chamber it would literally fall into the chamber and would not be struck by the firing pin. Rimless cases head space on the case mouth.

To the question, yes the 45 Super can safely be fired in a T/C chambered in .45 ACP

I thought it would work just fine!! The reason being that I want this barrel is because everybody has the big boomers and I wanted something a bit different!!! Besides, I already have a .44 mag. I only wish it was 12" instead of 15". But I am a machinist so it I don't like the extra length, I'm sure I can fix that!!! ;D

Well I got it!! I'm loading 230gr. XTP's at around 1100 fps!!! That data is in a 5" barrel, so I don't know how much difference it is in this 15"!! It shoots great!!! The three shot group was at 50 yards!!

If you ever want to convert it to a 460R let me know.

We have been taking the Smith 45ACP revolvers and reaming them out to 460R and they are F-U-N fun, still able to use 45ACP and 45AR due to the moon clip, but my point is that the 460R offers a significant increase in power over the .45ACP and .45 Super. Higher pressure and more powder capacity.

You may also play around with seating your bullets out a little since you can use the extra lead for slightly higher powder capacity, just watch it as you'll also be decreasing the bullet jump and it may spike on you.
