Beaver in lakes?
« on: February 22, 2009, 02:34:19 AM »
Been scouting some new areas for beaver this winter. Been finding some in lakes, and streams that go into and out of lakes. If the ice goes out before season ends, how are these beaver different to trap than the beaver that I've trapped in streams and rivers. Do they stay in the lake after ice out. Is there more that one colony in a lake? Just thought I'd start a new topic and learn a few things along the way. Thanks for any responses.

Shawn, there may be more tham 1 colony on a lake. It's one of those deals, if conditions are right and depending on the size of the lake--you could have several colonies.
As the ice pulls away from shore, these beaver will move like crazy. They have been locked in all winter. If you have interconnecting rivers and streams, they will cruise these also.
You will have another big push of traveling,as the two year olds are expelled from the colonies. When this happens, you will have beaver in a bout any piece of water around--They are like the ole boll wevil---"just a lookin for a home".
Get ready for "castor Mound Making Time "--spring beaver trapping is my favorite season of all.--Got Lure????
 Good luck.

Tom, thanks for the reply, I been looking in lakes that are connected to streams that I know have beaver in. Been finding a fair amount of beaver that I didn't know where there. I hope the ice goes out in time to take advantage of my newly gained knowledge. If not, next fall I'll be going after them with a boat. It has to be easier than carrying all that stuff through to woods. And yes I got lure. #1 and #2, and some stuff that I made. Can't wait to try it out. Beaver trapping by far is my favorite trapping.

Told you --beaver trapping is addicting. To me, they are the kings and queens of the waterways.
Are you going to set those streams before the lakes go out?
Keep us posted on your ice conditions, and your progress.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to get a little exercise so I did a little ice trapping. This was today's catch. The creeks that are connected to the lakes are still ice covered. After today I decided I don't need any more exercise. I need the ice to go away. And yes I know that I'm addicted.

Way to go Shawn.Ice must be going out in some places. Lure orders are coming in from michigan and illinois, and stabilizer seekers from wi..
Cold snap is supposed to hit next wednesday, lets hope its all up hill from there.
Let us know when your ice starts to go. I have 330's and the rest of my equipment to get ready.

I pulled my traps because there is a fine line between ice trapping and water trapping. I don't want to check ice sets with waders. One set location that I checked I could see the traps through a big hole in the ice that wasn't there when I set them. One trap tipped over and I had to fish the pole with the trap attached out of the drink. But that was OK because it held a 50 pounder. That was an area that the beavers appeared to be in and open water situation but, I would have to cross a lake to get to that spot. I think that I'll wait for the ice on that lake to go out.
