"Semi-beavertail" stock forend

Do these still give you a comfortable grip because they look to me like there isn't enough wood there to hold on to, unless it's significantly wider in that area?

 I've got several of both styles but prefer the "semi-beavertail" aestetically. They are the same size where I hold them so they really don't feel different for me.
