5/64 cable

Hi GBO!  I'm new to this sight, it looks very educating!  I've been trapping for several year, never ran a big line just local around my place.  I took up snaring a few years back and it works out alot better with my schedule etc. for checking traps.  I was using 3/32 cable with cam locks with great success except for coyotes.  They would literaly walk around my sets.  I averaged about 1 to 2 yotes a season...   Then I'd call in about 5 .  This season I got 500' of 5/64 cable as it seemed to be the hot thing for coyotes.  To date I've snared 9 yotes .  But I haven't been pleased with my dispatch ratio.  Tonight I checked my set and I lost a dog, just made me sick  .  What I'd like to know is what do you recommend for dispatching yotes with the 5/64 cable.  Everything alway says it works for 3/32 & 5/64    I need some input from one of you experienced snaremen.

What kind of locks are you using? When I lived in another state I used Amberg locks locks with good success , also used a stinger spring with cam locks with better success they are a very lethal combo, puts a coyote down in a minute or so .

Also if you dont have entanglement  and sounds like its legal in your state (not mine)   you can pound in a piece of rebar to get yote to tangle around in and get his front feet off ground to help snare lock uthanize him.  I know of  some trappers that use  the spring loaded locks  for yotes and even with entanglement have live yotes at times.   Good luck.

I've been using cam locks, they worked great with the 3/32 cable but seem to slip or relax to much with the 5/64 cable.  I always make my sets with a rebar stake for support which doubles as an entanglement or they are located in some brush or thickets.  I've found two yotes that couldn't move more then 4" but were still alive.  I just got a dozen mini snare locks, thats what I lost the yote with.  Cable was wrapped around the stake about 12 times and the cable was all frayed with NO dog.

Most of the guys I know they file small notches in the cam lock , so the cable does not back up when the coyote comes to the end of cable. I have had very good luck using 1/16 cable on coyotes using stinger springs.

I take it your useing 7x7 cable. you HAVE to use entanglement to hold a coyote in 5/64" 7x7 cable. As a matter fact.All cable you should use entanglement.In open ground,I like putting in 2 tangle stakes.
------------OR------------- Use kill springs.Altho I have NO, on line experance with kill springs. I have talked to enough snareman and made 1000's of snares with kill springs to know. That you much hit the magic number of 10 feet. Here I mean that the coyote must have a good head of steam when he hits the end of the snare.A 10 foot snare will give him enough run'n room to get up enough speed to SET the spring.
 Dont think eather, that you must use a two piece lock with kill springs eather.In two piece locks I would go with the Wedge type lock (AMBURG).Cam locks I have no time for. I just plan dont like them.
 Put a STINGER type spring behind a SLIM Lock .There my man,is a kill'n machine.

I started out useing just what my instuctors and mentors were useing. After about 25 years,I Just started to think that there "Just might be something better".I tryed 1x19 cable and never went back.
1x19 is faster,when loaded properly.More twist and chew restant than 7x7.you can use a smaller size 1x19 cable than 7x7 for any given animal.
