First shots Dom Dictator
« on: February 28, 2009, 01:12:59 PM »
Just a preliminary report with videos to follow maybe later tonight, for sure in the morning.   Walking out in the snow to get cans was a bit much on the new knee...I am going to take a pain pill and lay down...but I had fun

100 grains Cg distance 50 yards

125 grains Cg  distance 65 yards

150 grains Cg distance 75 yards

200 grains Cg distance 100 edge of pond

250 grains Cg 150 yards center of pond and about impact about 8 feet apart.

Raw video, don't blink you miss the shot...this will give you some idea how fast the quill is.

A quick check and it looks like this is the most dramatic smoke and fire picture I got.  You can see the can just ahead of the muzzle and it's already tumbling

Good shootin'  DD1

I wonder how the ranges will change at higher temps.

Did you get tumbling with each loads or just the last one?

It appears each an everyone tumbled, but the heavier the load more intense the tumbling until it would be better charactorized as spinning.

Looks like the new mortar works fine.  That fourth pic shows quite a crater; are you putting a little something in the end of that can with a fuzzy ended fuze on it?  Everyone was wondering how you could miss that pond, but you DIDN"T MISS, SO THERE!!  Send some of that snow down here.  We are as dry as a bone, dusty too!

Hope the knee is OK after the hiking today,

Actually the fourth picture is a very deep snow drift right on the edge of the pond and the can was buried in the bottom of that hole.  We walked the rounds right in on target!

I still am amazed how fast these quills are.

20 some odd years back I made something similiar with strawas and string and they were no where near as fast.

The down side is they are so much faster that you don't get to step back and watch the gun fire like with green fuse.

Glad to hear it went well . Dom builds a heck of a mortar .

I'm sure every shot tumbled , the air density and all in those sort of temps.  :D

What time does summer come around up there ? Looks cold , it's been kinda warm here latley . Bugs hatching , momma squirrels running around , robbins , noisey creatures keepping me up at night . (not the ol lady either :D)

sorry I couldnt resist ;D

Don't any of yous guys get the wrong idea , this is a "frozen wasteland" 10 months of the year ,or so . It's hard living ...at it's best !!!!!!  ;D

BTW There some killer deals at places like Marshells , I bought a fabulous olive wood cutting board which is thanks to the Seacoast guys now well on it's way to becoming 1911A1 grips .

This is the great thing about soda can mortars. You can use the projos over and over again. If walking through the snow causes the new knee torment; how does the weight of the
coehorn affect it? Looks like you're using a bunch of powder there, DD. You might have to switch over to Fg or FFg to make your powder last longer. That is a right smart looking
mortar. What kind of elevation were you getting with the 200+ grain loads?
When you're walking on eggs; don't hop!!

Using Fg or FFG isn't going to save powder, all it will do is raise pressure with no gain in velocity....

4 of these cans can be re used, two-the ones that hit the ice will have to go in the dumpster.

Moving the Mortar here at the house is done by handcart. Two people lift it up into and out of the truck...treking through the snow perhaps wasn't what the Docotor had in  mind when he said get out and do some walking...how ever I ain't asking  him to be sure!!

Yes it was a great day yesterday , cold raw SE wind came up @ the end . Really neat to see that little Fellow fire off . Yes the quills were quick.  The mortar was set @45 degrees as I recall.

When we went down to check range for each fired load , We took a short cut through the hedge . Snow held up the first two through the branches but Doug fell through the crusted snow . It was the leg with knee surgery . We walked back the long way . I do hope your recovery was not set back by this foolishness .   :-[

Now the worst part is I have the Mortar bug !   ;D

Serious search for bowing ball sized tubing under way . !!  ::)

1Southpaw --

WELCOME to the forum!

There are cures for the bug, but no one here knows them.

We're looking forward to YOUR pictures of smoke and fire from YOUR mortar/cannon!
