I have been doing a lot of reading and research since I got my C&R. I bid on an M44 Carbine and won a beauty for $87. Great looking little gun, clean, and bright bore. I also purchased a recoil pad, the muzzle brake, and the mojo sights. As soon as my ammo comes in, the range I will go. I thought about a stock but figured this would be the ultimate truck gun...survival gun...fun gun. Also, I may take it hog hunting. If I get a second one, I will probably get the longer 91/30 and do the sniper thing.

You guys are both in trouble now.
Keep the original stocks, they're durable and usually in pretty good shape. The carbines especially are very well-balanced and fun to shoot.

Stock up on ammo now! Buy it by the case (original wooden cases). Best prices....and you'll definitely use it up

I've totally enjoyed mine---I've sold off all except one 1921 91/30, but still have fond memories of all the time spent cleaning, refinishing, and SHOOTING

I'm going to keep the wooden stock because it is so nice. It is heavy for its size...which may help absorb any recoil. If the weather is good, I will hit the range tomorrow. I'm received a flyer with some great prices on ammo...300 rounds for 50 bucks.

I reload ... any ideas on brass. I suspect the Russians use the .311 bullets. I'd like to find a good source for brass. I'm figuring on stoking up some 150 grain softpoints.

I shoot Wolf gold 7.62/54r and reload it,also use bullets for .303 Enfield.

I will definitely keep the wood stocks!! they give them personality. I didn`t like the laminated ones they had-yuck!!

Remember, the 44 is suppose to be shot with the bayonet extended(for accuracy).

I've removed the bayo on some, adjusted the front sight accordingly, then shot it that way.
Obviously, have to readjust again if shooting with the bayo.

Either way, fun little rifles to shoot

My advice would be to get all the mosins while we can, while there still being offered before they dryup. Aim surplus and Southern Ohio Gun still have them being offered.

You can get;

1. russian mosin 91/30 (round receiver $69)
2. russian mosin 91/30 (hex receiver $79)
3. russian mosin 91/30 (laminated stock $89/$99)
4. russian mosin m38 (rare $89/$99)
5. russian mosin m44 ($69)
6. russian mosin m44 (laminated stock $79)
7. russian mosin 91/30 sniper w/scope ($399+) the prices vary

Years ago some of the laminated stocks were in unissued/new condition and they looked great. Time to time we see the mosin m38 and m91/59 still being offered. When you see it being offered you better grab it because we may not see too many more being offered in the future. These rare ones have to dryup sometime too.

Another point about the Mosin Nagants, the sight are set in paces not yards or meters, if the same as older Russian military rifles?

The older M91's sights were graduated in Arshins. According to 7.62x54r.net: "Arshin: An old Russian unit of measurement used on the M91 rear sights equal to 28 inches or .71 meter."

Most of the surplus M91/30's, M44's, and M38's sights are in meters. -AimHigh

mine shoots a coupla inches high at 100yds with the sights the whole way down.

I started out with an M44 from BIG-5 that could hit the inside of a barn on a good day. After playing around with reloads I found Hornady .312 bullets shot ok, 3 inches at 50yd. Wanting something a little better I found a 91/59 with excellent bore that shoots into an inch at 50yd. Then since I dislike reloading a cartridge for just one gun I found a nice Fin M39 that shoots as well as my 91/59.

A 91/59 is the way to go if you can find one. I had a couple of the M-44's, but finally picked up a non-import marked 91-59 that did not have the muzzel counter bored that is a fine shooter. I have dies for it but just pull down some 180gr silver tips and put the 180gr british 303 bullets in their place, then crimp them with the lee factory crimp die. This works out real well for me and it is really cheap to do. They do have some recoil however. I hear the logner ones are a lot better in the recoil area. Larry

Raise the front sight. Numerous ways to do it. Try a google search, you'll probably get some good ideas, and they'll be better explained than I can do here

No offense, but these are not the real prices from SOG. Call them to verify the prices first. Their flyer and their website are wrong.

I've got one m44 and two m91/30 I bought them to shoot in my gun clubs "Tommy Atkins" match,first I shot the m44 and with open sights and my bad eyes, I finished dead last...I really needed some trigger time so for the next few months, I worked on my techneck and worked on several different loads and at 200M I'm now doing much better although I'm getting groups at around 3 inches and 4 inches with the m91/30 and not the m44 I'm pretty sure I wont finish dead last this next shoot.I'm up against guys shooting M1 Grands and a lot on British enfolds etc. I hope to at least finish second to last or better.....hahahaha

I really do like the Nagants and I'll keep the three I now own and if the wife doesn't mind tooo much, I may try for a Swiss or an M1,who knows

I have one of the camo ATI stocks on my Mosin sporter.
I had to use my Dremel to relieve a few spots so it would fit good.
Only took a few minutes and everything fit very well.
The synthetic stock changes the whole look and feel of the rifle, it is much slimmer and has a higher comb. Makes it feel like a modern rifle.
Seems like there is less felt recoil with the ATI stock too.
I'd say that the stock is worth the money.
