Basic Powder Inventory
« on: February 26, 2009, 07:54:30 AM »
If you were starting to get concerned with the current political climate and wanted to stock up on several different brands of powder for handgun reloading, what would you buy?

I have some pretty basic handgun calibers:  9mm, 45ACP, 38sp, 357mag, 41mag, 44mag, 45lc. I’d appreciate your suggestions. I’m basically starting from scratch

I'd stick with the tried and true , Bullseye , H110 and Unique , these 3 will work well for the rounds you listed . The Busllseye for most of your general shooting , the H110 for your full power mag loads and Unique for your cast bullet work .

That would work for me too. I have been taken by the Winchester powders lately so I might choose W-231  Unique and W-296. Is it true that 110 and 296 are the same powder?

Unique or Universal and H110. The best thing to do is find what powders are available in your area. Some areas are big on Hodgdon powders and others Alliant, IMR, or Winchester powders.

Those 3 would work for me!

This is exactly what I would suggest!!

If you cannot get H110, then W296 is damn near exactly the same. (NOT interchangeable data though)

Unique is a must, it will work for jacketed stuff too.

Bullseye is a long standing target load powder for the likes of 32s&w, 38spl and 45 auto.

As much as I like H110/W296 I'd rather fore go it than 2400.

Yea, actually H110 and Win. 296 are exactly the same and the data is interchangeable.

Thanks guys! Waiting for Unique to come off back-order at MSS so I can get everything on one big order to make that haz-mat shipping fee easier to swallow.

+1, Unique and 2400... but I'm a relative newb at handgun caliber reloading.   :-[

Bluedot and WW296/H110 would handle everything I had and more.

In handguns I generally only load for 9x19 and 7.62x25, but I've really come to like Titegroup.  It shoots well in all of my handguns, and it takes very, very little of it to load a round, so you can stretch a bottle of it a long way.

I might actually run into town after work today and pickup another 2 lbs of if it actually.

Need to get some more rifle powders too.  IMR 4350 is more or less my universal rifle powder (need some more of it too).  While I've found loads that work better in various guns, IMR 4350 has a listed load for pretty much every cartridge I own, so for stocking up for a SHTF scenario, I'd like to have a good bit of it stuck aside.

I couldn't.....not unless I could have Lil' Gun instead. For the Revolvers I reload for, I like Unique for plinkers and either the H110 or Lil' Gun for hunting loads.  2400 is also in my current powder locker and works well for me for middle of the road loads....but those are the loads I use the least.
