30-30 & 125 gr. sierra HP
« on: March 28, 2009, 01:06:48 PM »
Has anyone used the 125 gr. hollow flat points n a 30-30 for deer? I just picked up a box of them for reloading. I usually stick with the 150's.

444,  :)On another site, one of the guys used them on deer and as I remember he thought they were ok. Last fall I shot a whitetailed doe with my Marlin  30-30 it has a 24 inch barrel and I used 130 grain Speer designed for the 30-30. Honestly, I wasn 't impressed. >:(  It seemed to really come apart: I will shoot the rest up at varmits, but no more deer. I have shot quite a bit of game with light bullest in various calibers, and this one didn't impress me. With my 30-30's I will stick with 150 grain WW Silvertips. ::)  I know you ask about Serria, but they are a hollow point so I would suspect they will expand even more. ;)

Did not want you to think we didn't care, but I can't help with 125 gr. Sierra loads.  Not unlike Wyo. Coyote Hunter, I use 150 gr Speer FN in 30-30 (for hogs mostly) and have no excuse to complain about them, except for the kids shooting hogs in the wrong places and my having to look high and low in the thick stuff for all that adrenaline laced muscle just looking for a fight.

a lot of 30 cal 125 bullets are meant for varmint load in the bigger guns like 06 and 08 class rifles so it does make sense that they would come apart even at the velocitys yu are getting in the 3030. im not sure there is even a big game bullet at 125 grn suited for what yu are doing with the 3030.i love the 125 in my savage 340 but have yet to shoot a deer with it.

I load these bullets for my dad in his 30-30 and he killed a doe with them this year.  We were not impressed with them and he is using them now just to plink around until they are used up.  I loaded 150 grain last time and they did the job alot better than the 125s.  He will be using the 160  leverolutions from here on out.  Doug
