Clearcoat over decals
« on: February 28, 2009, 04:38:21 PM »
I put some decals on my tanks and want them protected.  Has anybody tried useing a spray can of a clearcoat like sustance to spray over anything on their bike?

used to lift photos off the paper and put them on a white painted background then seal them down with clearcoat. Great way to put the playmate of the month on your bike

Have done it for years with automotive clearcoat (Imron,PPG and others).  Have never tried spraycans. We put several coats down, wet sanded to get smooth finish. Recoat again until surface is smooth and even at decal edges. Let cure fully. Buff and Wax. What a beauty.

Make sure you clean all of the wax off the tank first though with a quality wax and grease remover and scuff the paint with a scotchbrite pad. Make sure the clearcoat you are using isn't a lacquer- it will lift the enamel if it is. If it was me I would pull the tank off, drain the gas, and take it to a body shop. They should be able to do it for 75-100 dollars, which is a lot cheaper that If you mess up the paint and then have to have to have it repainted.
