I have been shooting my T/C contender a bunch and finally turned it into a rifle.
But I think I want to get a Handi.  I really like my SS1 in 22mag.
So here is the question.
What should I get as my first Centerfire Handi?
Now a little criteria.
Want it to be in a calier I already own. Here is what I own.  I own a bunch more but these are what the handi comes in.
22Hornet,223 ( I have 4 rifles and one pistol for this now), 30-30*, 308, 30-06, 357mag, 44mag, 45 colt, 45-70( have 3 now 1895 Marlin, Ruger No.3, and Siameese bolt).
I want it as a knock around gun, I am leaning toward the 30-30.  Will either use iron sights (41 and can still see to shoot open sight) or a 2.5-7X32 weaver scope.
Let me know what you would do in calier and model?

The first thing that came to my mind was the 30-30 win followed by the 357 mag.
 Both are notoriously good shooters and fit your requirements.

It would be hard to beat that 30-30. Wholesale Hunter in Missouri has them for $198.03
right now.

I don't have the 308 or the 30-06, but the rest you named are really good.  How far you planning on shooting?  For cheap to shoot and easy to load, the pistol calibers are real hard to beat.  They all do alot better in a rifle than in a short barrel, and can reach out past 100 yd easy enough.  DP

I agree.  The .357 is cheaper to shoot than the .30-30 if you don't reload, and you can always do a Maxi job on it and get .30-30 like performance.  My knock around guns are my .357s, Handi and Blackhawk.

I would get the 308 just in case u need to reach out some and it doesnt kick as hard as the 06.

Cant beat the .357 for fun and maxed out it is aproaching the .30-30, cheaper to shoot but harder to find, I'd prolly start with a .30-30. 8)

Hey McWoody!

For a knock around fun gun, I'd undoubtedly go with the 30/30.   8)  No... wait,  :o  the 45Colt!  Um, on second thought, make that the 357!  :-[   No no!  the 44 Mag!  yeah! that's the ticket...

My vote would be:

45/70 for the bigger stuff, (and fun factor)
30/30 for the medium stuff or a .357 if you plan to make it a max, (both fun)
.357 Mag for the medium to smaller stuff since it can also shoot .38 specials (also fun)
for purely small game, just stick with the .22 Mag since you already have it or get the .223 for longer range (fun if you bought the .223)

The one master do-all would be the 45-70 hands down, but I think the 30-30 would win the best all-around general purpose for a beater rifle, especially for a non-reloader. That way you can get a buffalo classic later in 45-70 and won't scratch it up under the seat of your pick-up, if you can fit it under there!

I'd get a 12 or a 20 tracker slug barrel. You can shoot slugs or use as a shotgun

When I say knock around gun I mean truck gun.  Do they make a handi with open sights and plastic stocks?  Or do I just need to buy the plastic stock later?
I am thinking of it for a walking around or rainy day rifle for deer, pigs, and other critters.
as the handi price is only a few dollars more for the whole gun than just a barrel for a T/C Might as well get a whole gun.
I am thinking of the 30-30.  Ammo is easy to find and is reasonable in price and with enough oomph for big game. 
I don't know you all do make a good point about the pistol rounds out of a long barrel being fine out to 100 yards.
Altlaw, I just may have to get one of each.  Except the 45-70.  I already have three of them and what can the Handi do that the Ruger No 3 or the Marlin 1895 can not.  Not to mention a Siamese custom in it.
Slug gun is going to come later.  I usually hunt in rifle states.  But before I take that leap I will ask what you all think.
