Yes, as a matter of fact I did make it there, although on business. I got out of my truck Friday night at about  10:20PM, just in time to not be able to see because of the crowd, but to hear a man about 100 feet south of me shoot another man 5 times. The shooter is in jail, and the shootee is probably by now, buried. Twice in the head, and 3 complete misses. Wonder where those other three rounds went. A LT. friend of mine I helped while there
couldn't believe no one else got hit either.
After retiring from L.E. 15 years ago, after a 20 year career, it was an exillerating feeling not to have to RUN TO, a shooting when everyone else passing me was RUNNING FROM the same event.
Love New Orleans, and mardi gras. ::)

P.S. I'm sure the guy had a good reason for shooting the other guy. After all, it was mardi gras. ::)

I had been planning to go this year for years but it fell through because of $$ problems.  My 31st b-day was on Lundi Gras, and one of my best friends 30th was on Mardi Gras this year.  He has lived in Chalmette since Katrina but lived in the Garden District for about 10 years.  I have been to NO 3 times in the last two years, once for Jazz Fest, once because my buddy had his 1st child, and once just 'cause......  I officially consider it to be the only city I could ever live in.
This that I do, I do by my own free will.

I go to New Orleans WEEKLY on business, and have for 2 years. I consider it a good city to be AWAY FROM. It reeks of racism from BOTH SIDES, and a gimme attitude.

I made my first Mardi Gras in 1957, since then I have ventured back a couple of times but have no desire to go back now.  NO has always been a dangerous city, it is a good place to get ripped off or get killed if you don't watch your step, and the sad part, most often it is from the police.  I understand the Chief of Police is making an effort to clean up his department, but he has yet to prove it.

I haven't been back since Kintrina but prior to the storm all one had to do was ride around the city and take a look and you could understand why there were so many problems there.  I was once told that better than 60% of the people were on some form of welfare, most didn't want to work and were 2, 3 and even 4th generation welfare bums.  One case I personally knew of, the grandmother had seven children, all with different fathers, never married any of them, she had five daughters, each one of them had several children by different fathers, never married, and their children were on thr same path, all living at the government's expense.

It is OK for a visit if you watch your step, but not a place I would want to take my family for a vacation.  I spent 23 years in the military, traveled around the world several times and never had the same fear of a city that I do for NO, that includes walking the back streets of Sigon unarmed and after dark.

What I have taken from New Orleans is that it is MORE.  More beautiful, more music, more food, more art, more crime, more nasty, just plain...more.  It is kind of larger than life.  You can have a better time there, but it is a city that will EAT YOU ALIVE if you have the wrong temperment and don't watch your step.  I've seen it happen.

A good friend went to NO with his wife several years ago. Parked the car and walked less than 2 blocks. They were propositioned by prostitutes and voodoo trash at least a dz times before they got back to their car, pointed it North and never looked back. A guy at church said his oldest boy and his wife went to mardi gras and got a motel room. They went to the street, then back to their room and left. He said, Dad, I'm bad, but these people are real scum. Lou took in a bunch of refugees from katrina. The next exodus Lou said, we don't want any more of them. Sounds like a cesspool to me. I went to Mardis Gras once in the late 70's.   It was particularly warm that year and with high humidity and no wind the whole town reeked of sweat, urine and vomit.   I made up my mind then I did not want to go back.  It had to be the dirtiest place I have ever been.

Not my cup of tea.

The murder rate went up 30% in Houston after Katrina, and according to police stats it was directly related to New Orleans refugees.

It is not a place that you want to go and drive around.  I've alway had a local "guide" who knew where to go and where not to go.  Most cities this is a hood by hood basis.  NO it is street by street.  It is very segragated and you do NOT want to be in the wrong area.  That being said, 90% of all of my awake time in NO happened from 1pm-7am, and I never found more trouble than I was looking for.  As far as the cops are concerned as long as you are not raping or murdering someone and there are no weapons involved they don't much care.
This that I do, I do by my own free will.
