Hi,

I've been a fan of the toggle link guns since befor CAS, the 73 being my prefered type. I recently picked up a couple of 92s in some gun deals, one a carbine the other a round bbl. rifle, both in 44-40.

That carbine is one slick little nice handling rifle, I mean it's fast, accurate and a dream to carry. The rifle is no pig either, and it's a tack driver. They both seem better balanced then their toggle linked counter parts and are certainly lighter. Only negative I can see is taking them apart, getting that bolt with the ejector thingie in and out is a real pain. Maybe it's because they are still new to me but when I wanna take a walk, I grab that 92 carbine and a pocket full of shells more often than not.

So what says you? Do you like the Toggle links or the new fangled 92s? And Why?

Howdy,

The 92 is the rifle that sounds like a cowboy gun, to me.
Strangely I don't own one right now, for CAS. My Grandfather's saddle gun lives on a pair of antlers on the wall. It is the reason I started in CAS.

I have found the Marlin 94 to be the rifle that works best for me, but I really want to like my 66 the best.. It could still happen.

You're right about the '92 carrying easier in the woods. I started my deer hunting career 42 years ago with an 1873 win in 32-20. It had the long octagon bbl and felt so heavy to this young kid that I thought it should have had wheels! I was so happy when Dad bought a '94 in 30-30 and I didn't have to carry that "old, heavy" gun anymore. We sold that "old" gun for $15 and was happy to get it. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb! 44 Man

I have been looking at the 92 also, since it isn' t allowed in cowboy classic though I wonder what the thinking of that is? I think they look real classic. I will never shoot CC anyways and might just get one of them when my ship comes in. :grin:

I like the 92s because I can AFFORD them! The 73s, yaller boys, ' Henry's are all way to pricey fer my blood!

And I like that the 92's will handle full house loads for hunting! I bought my first Rossi many years ago for deer hunting with .357s. It could handle hot loads that would put a Mizzora deer down hard 'n fast and it was nice to pack in deep timber and brush!

Did you know that, when Winchester brought out the '92, it was supposed to immediately replace the '73 in their line-up. Well, they kept getting orders for '73's in such a volume that they had to keep making them until the '20's! I guess those old-timers were just as "traditional" as we are today. :roll: I have two '66's, but no '92 :wink:

I'm just the opposite, the Klink/clunk noise of a 73 is the sound that says "cowboy" to me.

I just saw a 32-20/30" go for over 2K on Gunbroker, amazing... :roll: Remember when 97s were 80 dollar guns...and they had an inch of dust on them... :grin:

I went shooting Sunday, that little 92 is great. But when I really wanted to hit things, my favorite 73 still got the call. I think the extra wt. helps in my off hand shooting. I'd love to take the 92 deer hunting, when I get out of this no-rifle state I will...

I Love my M92's. Got a Winchester SRC and a hex barrel rifle in 32-20, a SRC in 44-40, an El Tigre (Spanish copy) in 44-40, and an EMF copy in .45 :wink:
