BAR Butt stock loose
« on: March 26, 2009, 02:28:57 PM »
I've got a problem with a 1989 built BAR, the butt stock is loose and I don't know the first things about fixing this. Can anyone help?  Also, the trigger on this rifle appears to be some sort of composite material, could this possible? The trigger guard and housing looks and feels like metal but the trigger is another story. Anyone care to field that one?

Thanks.

The triggers on every BAR I've owned were a gold-plated metal - most likely a sintered steel.

The buttstock should be able to be snugged up to the rear of the receiver via removing the butt plate/pad and tightening the attachment - unless the wood's shrunk for some ungodly reason, which I've never run across before.

       Thanks for the good information. I was hoping removal of the butt plate would expose a nut but wanted to know before I went screwing with things. The trigger is not gold plated and the rifle has been shot only a few times, so it cannot be that the plating has worn off. It is possible that the previous owner installed a different trigger??

You'll just need a long screwdriver to tighten the machine screw that holds the buttstock on.
I would suggest you not ever take that screw out as it screws into a plate that is loose in the back of the receiver and it's a PITA to get the screw back into the plate.  I doubt the trigger has been replaced, no aftermarket triggers that I know of.  If the trigger works, I wouldn't worry about it.

 I had to take a BAR stock off a year or so ago. After you get the recoil pad off shine a light up there. I used 2 socket extensions to get up to the nut.

Some of the older BAR's didn't come with a gold trigger. My dad has a BAR in .300win mag with the black trigger, and I once had a 30-06 without one.

I believe you need to get to the Grade II or possibly Grade III to get the gold colored trigger. My Grade I is blued.

Thanks guys;
                    I checked my trigger using a magnet and it is only mildy attracted to it. Same goes for the magazine holder or floor plate, which ever it is called. It barely attracts a magnet. I am happy with the trigger though. It has little creep or take up and is acceptabley crisp. The rifle appears accurate enough as well. Off a sandbag and allowing the barrel to cool will produce under 1", 3 shot groups at 100 yards. Raid fire and a hot barrel produces a 5 shot verticle group of ~6"-8" while windage remains tight, @100 yards. I am pleased.
                    Since I've got your attention, are there any special cleaning techniques I should know of relating to the BAR? This is the first and only hunting type centre-fire rifle I have shot. Thanks a million.

[are there any special cleaning techniques I should know of relating to the BAR?]

Just like any other gas auto, don't let the gas ports in the narrel. or the gas piston, get lead fouled by shooting non-jacketed ammo - or you'll have a headache of a cleaning job to fix the resultant misfeeding.

And like the Remmy auto's, they're susceptible to all sorts of smaller woody "junk" getting in behind the closed bolt while hunting, and drifting down into the trigger group - which can be removed for a good clean/lube after removing the buttstock, if ever needs be.
