Famage 1952 basically means they were rebuilt by the Govt. in that year. These rifles were of FN manufacture, which rivals anything the mauser factory put together. Yes they are suitable for the 257 weatherby strength wise, but it is unwise to alter these action to get the length you would need for the weatherby. My opion is stay with any short mag or standard cartridge  MIKe

thanks for reply.it is my understanding these were modified for 06 cartridges,so a 257 wby should fit for length ?but bolt face and feed ramp work right?

Case head size differences - .473 for the 06 or the 7 and 8mm Mausers, .531 for the Wthby Mag, so you may need bolt face work.  Overall length on the 06 is a bit longer than the 257, running about 3.34" to the 257s 3.26" so the feedramp should not be a problem.

This project may require some real gunsmithing advice.  Why don't you run this down on the Gunsmithing Forum and see what they say.

that is correct they started out as 7mm mauser and modified for the ought 6 in 1952. There should be a little relief cut in the back of the receiver to accomodate the longer round
