gunman,
Certainly can! Any of the newer powders in 2f grade will work just as well, if not better than the Pyrodex or Triple 7 pellets....In fact, I would say that not only is it cheaper to use, but you can "fine-tune" a load much easier with powder over the drop an' ploppers! Don't have to worry 'bout making sure the black tip end goes in first either.  Good Luck!

SAVAGE-T

I really don't mean to make this a smart _ss question, but I admit that I'm a little slow when it comes to the new fangled shootin irons.  Can't a person just use black powder in those things and save money over pyrodex and 777 powders?  From what I read, you still have to clean after shooting them?

crow-feather,
You are correct-a-moondo!!!!  Absolutely no reason why regular B/P won't work in ANY modern muzzle loader you use today. As I said, you certainly can save some coins if you want to use black powder instead of the new substitutes.  I think the biggest hurdle today is being able to find B/P without going through the hassle of ordering a case lot and getting hit with the Haz Mat chgs. too!  Most local dealers won't bother carrying it any longer.
Now, if you know about a black powder shoot at a local club that is happening in your area, stop by and there should be someone there selling individual 1 lb. cans of B/P.  Some clubs, like the one I belong to, will go in together and buy a lot and split it up between friends making it a reasonable deal for everyone.
As far as clean-up is concerned.....it ain't no big thing to clean up!  Some say it's easier than Pyrodex!  I use soap and hotwater followed up ASAP with a water absorbing lubricant such as BALLISTOL or BREAK FREE clp.  When it's time to clean out the bore before firing, I place a clean patch on the jag and swab out the bore with a little Windshield washer solvent.  Next, I place a second clean patch on the jag, push it down the bore and leave it there, fire off a couple primers into the patch, to clear the primer hole path, and remove the patch and rod and we're set to go for the day.  No worries and you don't get into that Bore-Butter junk.

Gunman- Ditch those pellets and buy some powder. Get a nice brass powder measure, and you are set up. It is a lot cheaper.
For hunting, I have some quick load tubes. Just load 4 or 5 up with the powder charge in one end and the bullet in theother, no problem, you can load just as quick as those pellets.
Aim small don't miss.

Just like it was already stated, you can fine tune your load to what your rifle will shoot the best.  My 50cal likes 65gr of 2ff Goex, can't get that with pellets.  Pellets are fine if your getting good groups and hitting the target decently, no fussing in the field.

:D   I go with savageT and these guys.  Plain BP is cheaper than the pellets and you can do a lot better of a job tuning the gun with it.  There is nothing that states that these guns have to use pelletized powder only.  Also, in the Single Shot Exchange there is a company that will ship as small as 5 cans of your preferance in BP.  Now...........if I can just find my copy.................stay safe........King

There you go!  I knew I liked this guy.  Just wish I could get someone to lend me an underhammer for 10-20 years!
