What am I to do?
« on: March 06, 2009, 03:20:47 PM »
What am I to do? My vans transmission 3RD gear went out about 2 months ago. We have not been able to fix it because of lack of work on my part. We just have my wifes car now to get around in now. Well the inspection was up on my wifes car this past month and I took it to the garage I normally deal with to get it inspected. He has done some work on my van in the past and knows the van. I told him my 3RD gear went out and I need a another transmission. He said he had one in the back that would fit. I said great how much for it and to install it. He said he could do it for $300.00 to $350.00. At the time I did not have the money and told him I would try to come up with it to get it fixed. We have to have 2 forms of transportation in this family period. Well there is other work that needs done on the besides just the transmission. It needs brakes front and back and inspected also. I did something I really should not have done and did not want to do it in the first place. I own my mothers life insurance policy so I borrowed $1,200.00 against it so I can get the van fixed. We are behind on a couple other bills so I figured I could put any surplus toward them. Well I took the van up to him today to have it fixed. I drop it off and I get a phone call a hour and half later. He says the transmission he has does not fit my van. Now I am screwed!!!!!!!!!!!! >:( I jumped on this because it was a good deal. I found money we don't have to do this. I have been calling around and can't find any salvage yard that has my transmission. They say if they did have it, it would run between $350.00 and $400.00 just for the transmission not to mention what it would cost me to have it installed. I am so screwed!!!!!!!!!! Looks like I have some extra money now because I called many transmission places and it will cost me between $1,200.00 and $1,600.00 to rebuild it. I just don't have that kind of money. Besides I only payed $1,000.00 for the van last year and have put $800.00 in repairs since then. It is not worth it anymore. In my head it is going to cost more to fix this than it is worth. I would say with this surplus money I could go out and buy me a new Remington 700 but there is no way on this earth it would fly with my wife. :o Do any of you guys got a cheap transmission for a 1993 GMC Vandura 2500 with a 5.7 liter engine? That is the only way I am going to get out of this mess. Dale

Dale, talk to your man and find out which models of cars has a tranny that will work and then go to the local car auction and buy a junker chevy car that they drive in.
You can test drive them before the auction.
Doesn't matter if the motor smokes.
Better if it does.
No one will really want it and you should get it for a couple hundred.
Now you have your trans.
Most of the time the tranny will still be good.
Worth a shot.

Dale-
Tell the wrenchmonkeys to put in a th350 transmission. GM is and WAS the only company that was smart enough to make their engines to match any transmission. The only difference between the th400 that is in your van and the th350 is overdrive, unless you have a 700 series transmission, then it might be a little harder to find a donor.
Find out what you have- GM engines and transmissions cross a lot of years. Let me know (pm) what trans you have, i'll help you out.

Youre welcome Dale.
When you are 100% sure you want help or advice, then ask for it!I thought you really wanted to fix your van so you could work.

If you mean this jumble of stuff. I don't know!!!!!!! I give you what my van is. I don't know anymore. If you want to build a house I know about anything about that. I am as dumb as a box of rocks as far as cars go. I was not trying to insult anyone with this thread. Dale

If its a '92 it probably is a 400, not a 700, didn't mean to get you wound up.

Dale,

If I was your wife I would be chewing your a$$ as well. You are saying that you must have two modes of transportation to get by. You then talk about getting a new rifle, instead of fixing your van? You need to get your priorities straight. You dont have a job, you want to buy a rem 700, where are you gonna get the money for the ammo?

Consider checking in with the local high-school auto shop class, or Community College autoshop class, to see if they take in vehicles to repair ( training aids for students ).
You might consider having your mechanic pulling the trans pan, cleaning it out, putting in a filter, adding "Lubeguard", and giving it a go. Might get some more miles out of it.

Have said it before and will say it again.  Before I was going to the food bank and whining I had no money, I would get any job I NEEDED to to take care of my family.  I honestly think that posts like this are more soliciting assistance than advice.  He is hoping someone will give him a tranny and put it in for him free of charge because he has hard times. Then he can go buy that new Remington.  So, take my post for what it is worth, but Dale, you cant have everyone else take care of you forever. It does honestly get tiring reading all these posts.  There are several on here with the same theme.  Good luck  Here is a thought get the tranny you have now rebuillt and maybe not think about a new gun when you cant afford to keep the bills up. If someone did have one, by the time it was shipped out the cost would be more than having the other one rebuilt.  Unless of course you give it to him and pay the shipping too.  Then he could get his van fixed and get that new gun.  Sounds kind of self centered to me, but what do I know.

You are just plain full of crap here and I was half way kidding about the new Remington. I don't have enough funds to trbuild it. I did find a little Astro Van with 68,000 miles on it for under a $1,000.00. I may go that route. Dale

half way kidding??  HALF WAY KIDDING??  that means you were halfway serious.  I am not the one full of crap here.  It would not cost anymore to have it rebuilt then to have one shipped to you and installed. Again it seems 2/3 of the posts you have on here are about whining hard times and looking for assistance. I call it poor me syndrome.  Two ways to handle it. Sit and whine life sucks or go fix it.  Easy to see which one you prefer.
