More than likely it was a Glenfield made by marlin. a cheaper gun and was sold by k-mart, sears as well as some other discount stores and sporting good stores. as you say barrel was a little shorter and did not come with a walnut stock, just hard wood and most had a gold trigger. I see one at the gun shows from time to time. Saw on at our local pawn shop ,owner thought he had picked up a rare and expensive marlin till I explained that it was a much cheaper version of a marlin made to sell at discount stores.
