Barrel swap
« on: March 08, 2009, 08:41:15 PM »
I'm new to the handi-rifle forum.  In the forum classifieds there are many posts looking for barrels of one caliber or another. This suggests that barrel swaping is as easy as a T/C.  Find a barrel for sale/trade from another owner and put it on and you're ready to go with your new caliber.   Then why does H&R/NEF require that we send the reciever in for new barrel fitting vs. simply purchasing one through a catalog like T/C?   What's the scoop on this ???

It's really a crapshoot as to whether or not a used barrel will fit your frame. I have gotten lucky most of the time when buying used as they have fit with no modifications. Don't be afraid to buy used if you find one in the caliber you want. Fitting a barrel to your frame is not at all hard to do if you are comfortable using hand tools (files, stones, etc.) If you are not good with tools, it would be an easy job for a gunsmith to fit a barrel for you. Check out the barrel fitting section in the FAQ's for more information as to how it's done. Check out the whole FAQ section if you have time... it's got alot of great information and helpful tips.

Welcome to the forum... There's no better or more helpful site on the net. ;)

If the swapping worries you the other option is to send the frame in for more barrels. It is a toss $ wise.

If it is a popular caliber and you are on the fence, just buy a gun IMHO, and you know that it is new and fits. I was perusing Dick's special order book, which seems to connected to Jerry's Sport Center. Some guns are too high. But on the other hand, ULSH for $169, basic pallet wood handi for $229, Survivor .308 for $229, their 4 week wait is less than a factory accesory barrel.
