SS,  Wondering who are "they" that you think made them for decades?
Brian, Here's how your rifle looked in it's original configuration.

They is Mauser? Mauser made sporting rifles for decades! Looks like one. If so it was never a military rifle at all.
And yes, I think they called one of their sporting models the "Standard Model" because it was sold in standard
instead of metric calibers.

here is a selection of sporting rifles made by Mauser. not sporterized military rifles.
they made smallbores and rimfires and a couple of shotguns. They even made 2 different models
of automobiles! THEY made a lot more than just military rifles... The single pic is a Standard Model
also in 270

IIRC, none of those models had the thumb cut in the receiver sidewall though.  brianscott's clearly does have the cut, which would seem to id it as a military model.

The thumb cut does not necessarily identify the rifle as military.  I have a Husquarvarna made Swedish Model 46 Mauser in 8mm that was made as a sporter but still wears the thumb cut.  The thumb cut only became superfluous when the rifle was scoped but for open sight use and quick reloading, the thumb cut is perfectly functional and very useful.

Also, after the war there were many, many (probably thousands) of M98 actions laying around and regardless of where produced wear the thumb cut.  I have no doubt the post war sporter makers used tons of those actions.  Hey, even my Swede, which was a used but beautiful European style sporter when I got it, is still nothing more than a Swedish made M98.  This darn thing still had a 2 stage military trigger and the stepped barrel when I bought it.  Now it carries a Bold Trigger with integral safety, smooth bolt block, and a scope but before that it was just a pretty M98.  Mikey.

Thumb cut would not be visible on any of the ones shown if they had it or not?
The one shown here does and it was never military. It is a 9.3x62.
The scope is a Mauser also. I forgot to add that THEY made optics also.

That is one BEAUTIFUL rifle gun there SS!   :o  My favorite style!  Even the caliber is great!  And one I don't have but want someday.   :(  Thanks for the pic.   :)

I have always Loved Mausers, I honestly do not know right off
hand how many I have had. Unfortunately the one shown is in
someone elses collection now. I still have about 8 mauser rifles in various
calibers though. I have been liquidating some of my collection
simply because I no longer had room for them all. And keeping them all maintained
properly was a time consuming chore. All have found good homes in nice collections.
I am actually thinking of donating a couple to the Smithsonian. They have 2 digit serial numbers.
And are in better shape than the ones they have. Sorta' rare you might say. Besides
that, some of those old Calibers kick like the Devil and I am getting kind of Long in
the tooth to be getting thrown around like that.

I know they do!  Look at the drop at heel!   :o  And I believe that is typical for that breed of rifle.   ;)  Great for Express sights though!   I'd still like to carve and cobble a recreation of one if I ever find an appropriate doner barred action.  :)
