AMT AUTOMAG II BY HIGH STANDARD

HAS ANYONE RECENTLY PURCHASED ONE OF THESE? I HAVE BEEN WANTING ONE FOR A WHILE,AND AM WONDERING IF THEY ARE RELIABLE? I LIKE THE 22 MAG. AS A ROUND AND HAVE HEARD MIXED RESULTS ON THE PISTOL, WONDERING IF IT HAS GOTTER BETTER OVER TIME?

I believe the 22LR is a better pistol round alaround and from what I remember from my friends 22Mag pistol it was the loadest pistol I've ever heard. Maybe hardest on the ears would be better. I seriously recomend never ever shooting one without good hearing protection.

I have 2 of the older 6" Automags and both are about as reliable as a rock, and very accurate. I do agree they are loud so just wear protection.

I have one of the older Irwindale AMT's and it has become my favorite handgun. I have a Burris FastFire mounted in place of the original rear sight and shoot tighter groups than I would have believed I could do. It has been totally reliable with all types of ammo except the Winchester Dynapoint which doesn't have enough power to cycle the action. My only complaint would be that the trigger and trigger guard are both tiny and the trigger pull is not the best. As to the new ones, I can't say if they are good or not.

A friend was just given one of the loder 22mags, guy said it wouldn't go bang anymore.  My friend stoped at the house with it on his way home,took one look and got out the can of gun scrub. It goes bang every time you pull the trigger now. Wonder why some people think you never have to clean a gun.

I just purchased an AutoMag and have only put around 30 rounds through it but each one went bang. I did not clean it before I shot it and three or four times it went click but I recocked it and it went bang so I figure it was just dirty. I have now cleaned it and it really needed the cleaning. If it ever stops snowing in my part of the country I will try running several clips through it and I'll let everyone know how it reacts. It will be interesting as I just today picked up 250 rounds of Dynapoint ... ya!

I have one of the older ones. You have to use the recommended ammo or the action doesn't cycle.I cleaned it before firing it and put to much oil on the firing pin and found it it fires better with the pin about dry. It may have been the oil I used back in them days.        They are loud. Shoot about dusk with winchesters and they throw a cool looking flame out the barrel.

Well Mr. coyotejoe was right the Dynapoint will not cycle the action. I tried 50 rounds and about half failed to cycle. Again the firing pin failed to fire several times. I will try, as brad373 suggested, to remove as much oil as I can then try it again with CCI ammo. At this point I do think I will be getting rid of this auto and go to a wheel gun. I never did trust an auto.

I tried  CCI ammo a few years back and it wouldn't cycle the action . It may have once or twice. The only ones i can get to work are winchesters . I use the full metal jackets.

i need help i just got a AMT automag II tonight is there some place i can find out when it was made ? also whats the best ammo to use in it ? im dieing to shoot it , its such a sweet looking gun

As to where it was made, mine says "Irwindale" on the slide, otherwise I would have no idea. Mine has been reliable with all ammo except the Winchester Dynapoint. I did have some failures to feed with the CCI 30 grain TNT. They have a really huge hollowpoint and it would sometimes hang up on the left side of the chamber but I switched to another magazine, got three with the gun, and the TNT's began to feed just fine. I've tried CCI in 30, 40 and 50 grains, Federal in 30, 40 and 50 grains, Remington in 33 and 40 grains, Winchester in 34 and 40 grains, and Fiocchi 40 grain HP's and SP's. All were reliable and accurate but I've settled on the Fiocchi soft points because they were about as accurate as any and less expensive than any others except the Dynapoints which are about the sorriest ammo I've ever seen.
