Of course, each rifle is different, but my main two .22's love the Federals. I've stocked up on the 550 ct. value paks from Walmart lately.
I have a couple big boxes of Remington also, but really don't know how they shoot as I've tried to stick to Federal.

The Walmarts near me (Eau Claire & Hallie, WI) have plenty of ammo. The Federal 550 ct boxes are still around $13

Other than .22, I try to keep plenty of ammo for the deer rifles and shotguns....not to mention keeping stocked up on Buckshot in case of a Panther attack  :o   ;)

I really like the CCI Stingers for .22 .
They group well enough for my gun,and they are more lethal than the solid .22 bullets.

There are a lot of very good suggestion on this one.  The only suggestion I can offer up to you is stock up on the standardized cailbers. .22lr, .45acp and .223.  Also if you have a .308 I would suggest you stock up on that as well.  .223 and .308 are NATO calibers (techincally yes they are 5.56NATO and 7.62NATO) and .45 is a common police issue caliber.  .22lr is just a great and handi round.

You never know when you'll have to borrow or give ammo to your neighbor.

Which Make guns have 1-8 twist rifling?

The SSS .22 ammo is made for a 1-8 twist barrel standard .22 barrels will usally not stabilize it, It just is not made to shoot out of a standard .22. Thier standard sub sonic .22 shoot really well out of all my .22s.  I shoot alot of Agulia ammo.

I have used all of them.
I like the remington bulk.  Yes you have more dead spots in the rim than the others but the bullets feed in all of my rifles.
I like the Federal but the 10/22's do not like the truncated bullets in the after market mags.  The kids like the big mag with lots of clay and potatos against the berm.
I do not see the Win as often as I do the other two and I do buy the 100 packs of the CCI sub sonic stuff for the back yard as well as the CB longs.  And I use the 40 grain lead Round nose standard stuff from them for small game hunting
I do not ever remember not having a CCI go bang.

Has anyone evere used the 22lr value packs made by Remington, and Federal. How do they compare to CCI or Winchester?

Thank You

I've shot both Remington and Federal.  I generally pick up the Federal.  My guns like it, it's cheap, and I don't have problems with misfires.  The federal also feels a little "hotter" but i've never chrono'ed or otherwise tested this theory.

Remember Guys, that most high powered rifles do not operate very effecently with Cast Bullets.  They require jacketed slugs.  The higher the speed the more the need for jacketed slugs.  Semi automatic rifles tend to foul up the gas ports fast with cast slugs, One of the worst would be AR-15 but 30-06 and 308 have problems as well.  Even some of the handgun ammo have problems with cast slugs with the hot loads.  So start stocking up on jacketed slugs for all of your survival guns.  Even if you do not reload yet, they will make great trading material.

So many are turning to swedging to overcome this problem.  Save your empty 22 caseings. They will be needed to make 223 slugs. Don

I went to buy some 7.62x39 on the internet and it seems everyone is in a panic and stocking up. I finally found some at a reasonable price. I think it is sort of insane what shooters are doing. I suspect after people get their fill of stocking up supplys will be back to normal. Once during the gas crisis many years ago Johnny Carson made a joke that the toilet paper factories would be shutdown. People ran to the stores and cleared out all the toilet paper. I recall my wife and I were looking for an old Sears catalogue to get by.

Having used a couple of different firearms for real against sundry gooks in the third world I note the following

a) You use surprisingly few rounds from a bolt action rifle. Myself and one scout were involved in a contact with about 50 russian equiped (and backed) Super Zipra (if anybody remembers them). I had a bolt action 9,3 Mauser, and my scout a G3.  12 rounds and the fight was over - we had sucessfully run away  ;) and they had lost at least 5 men. As a kid, we suffered several attacks on our house by gangs of both ZIPRA and ZANLA. I never once fired more than 10 rounds (I had a Bruno 7x57)  when the attackers were the poorly trained and led ZANLA gooks, but a couple of the attacks by the far superior ZIPRA gooks lasted 20 minutes or so and I got through 30-40 rounds.

b) with a full auto weapon you go through mountains of ammo. I had a couple of engagements with super Zipra with a Bren to hand and three with the HB lmg version of the F.N. FAL. Got through 150-200rnds each time - but there were fewer gook dead than when I had a bolt action rifle in my hands ;)

c) A shotgun is a lovely defensive tool! you do not need a big mag capacity- if you have fired more than two rounds from any one possition, you have hung arround too long! We used shotguns initially for anti-poaching operations. We had a shoot on sight policy, and most firefigts were at night, and initiated by us. As the aggressors, a shotgun didn't hold enough ammo, and most of the killer teams moved onto AR 15 with samson HP ammo. I went back to humping the HB FAL, and then as the gangs got larger, the Bren.

There is a whole world of difference between offence and defence. The attacker needs supressive fire to try and mask his attack. A defender only needs to fire when there is something worth shooting. As the agressor, you need your quarry to go down and stay down when you hit him - you are closing in, you are stepping over fallen enemy - they had better be dead or too badly hurt to fight! In defence, (except if they are inside the house) it is usually sufficient to hit the enemy - .22 or a single no 4 buckshot pellet will do nicely!

A rabble do not like accurate incoming fire! They go and look for easier targets!

So on stocking up ammo? If you don't have a semi auto AR, you will need less than you think! And if you do have a semi (or full auto) rifle, you had better have some means of lugging a resupply! 500rnds of 7.62 for the Bren loaded into mags weighs 37.4lbs - ie enough for two short engagements !
