45/70 guide gun sighting ???

Got my new guide gun last friday!

Took it out to sight it in today. Got a phone call that cut my session short, but I have a question.

Started out shooting at 25 yards, just to get in the ball park.

Got close with Rem. 405 grain.

Then went to LE ammo and they were 6 inches low.

Like I said, my session was way to short, but are these guns that sensitive to  diff. ammo?

By the way, recoil with the Rem was about like my .410, LE was stouter, but not at all bad.

i haven't had much chance to sight in the guide gun i bought yet but i did just recently shoot the remington 405 loads in my new 22inch handi and at 25 yards they shot 6 inches high, and i was about to adjust the sights when i shot a 325 LE and it hit dead center maybe 1/2 inch high at 25 yards. i was shocked by this i thought it would be the other way around, but at 50 yard the LE ammo was all in the bullseye with iron sights. cant wait to shoot some more out to 100 yards. good luck and keep us informed on how she shoots. thanks donnie

Donnie, thats about what happened to me, I stated with the Rem and they were about 6 inches high. I adjusted the sights to bring the poi down, then I tried the LE ammo and it was about 6 inches too low.

If I had started with the LE my experience would have duplicated yours.

Back to the range for more fun.

What isn't when the difference is over 700 fps of velocity and 80 grains of bullet weight?

I love my GG, ;D but sighting in with such a wide variety of ammo can be a challenge.  The factory loads are very mild.  Some of my stouter handloads have a much different point of impact. I've experimented with lots of handload combinations, and they all give good accuracy.  I installed the XS ghost ring sight set on mine, and had to raise the rear sight as high as it would go, then had to file down the front sight for one of my 405 gr. loads.  I've since installed a Weaver K2.5 scope, and it has all the adjustment I need.

Yes. 

I have some loads that shoot about the same, but they use bullets of similar weight at similar speeds.  Change things up and the POI can change significantly.

Why would the lighter and more aerodynamic bullet shoot lower. Just curious. I have a guide gun but only shoot le when hunting.

I handload from 325 to 425. The lighter ammo always shoots lower. The trajectory is typicaly flatter so the less prominent arc puts it lower at close range (20 - 50 yards) with a typical sight in distance of 100 - 150yds.

  I had a similar experience trying to sight in a 44mag carbine (not Marlin)  with two different rounds.  I had a box of inexpensive commercial reloads and a box of Horady Leverevoluton.  So completely different that it was not realy a time or money saver sighting in with the cheap ones because they were too different from the hunting ammo.

  Turns out the gun likes American Eagle 240gr JHP.

The best and easiest explanation I have heard is that the heavy bullet/ slower velocity load has more time to flip up the muzzle and hit higher on the close range target then a lighter/faster bullet since it leaves the barrel quicker before the recoil flips the muzzle up.

I have seen this when I increased powder charges using the same bullet and as the loads got hotter, the impact on the target went down.

i think that sound like mythbuster urban legend more than factual. do the math of the time it takes a bullet traveling 1700 or 1850 fps to leave an 18.5" barallel
. It's so close as to be in determinant.

It might be mythbuster material.

But, in a handgun the slower loads always shoot to a higher poi than the faster loads.

Its no myth. Heavy or slow will impact higher than light or fast bullets.
