Spanish Mauser Scope Mount
« on: September 18, 2003, 05:49:38 AM »
I have a 7X57 Spanish Mauser that has been Bubbhaized to death (almost). The action is good and the barrel's bore is rough but useable (my gunsmith says the headspace is good) but the sights are gone the first few inchs of the barrel has been cut off OAL @ 18". The only thing left on the barrel is the mount where the original rear sight was attached. I heard that there was a "scout type scope mount" that would attach to the rear sight mount. Is there such an animal? I know this is surplus rifle but in your travels have you run arcoss something like this.

Scope mount options

kjeff:  check the Shotgun News.  They have recently run articles on scout type mounts for mausers that replace the rear sight and fit right into the rear sight base with no gunsmithing.  Also, somebody out there is making a catalevered scope mount for the mausers that allows you to avoid the issue of bending the bolt.  I've seen both advertised in the Shotgun News.  HTH.  Mikey.

I hate to give away all mt secrets (hah. hah, hah) but here goes......go to Google Seach engine and type in "Mauser scope mounts".  That should get you enough info to keep you occupied for awhile!  I know that B Square makes one for the Large Ring and Small Ring receivers and is affordable as well.  Doesn't require a gunsmith to install either.

Thanks for the Info. The Bubbha that had it before me had the bolt bent to accomodate a scope.

Are you sure he bent the bolt?? Some of the spanish mausers had bent bolts even some of my chileans do to.                    BigBill

You may want to checkout the "98's see thru scope mounts" $16 at Samco Global Arms all I did was change the front mount base to a small ring $6 and it works perfect and high enough to use the orginal bent bolt too so no welded low turn down bolt is needed.

Thanks BigBill,
Now that I look at it ... It does look "Factory". I really want a 'Scout' look (Scope forward) not because of a certain gun pundit said so but because I handled and shot a Steyr Scout in .308 ($3000.00    a well healed friend's) and liked want I saw. I can put my "Spainyard Scout" in the trunk of my car and not be worried that I am transporting something that is worth more than my tranportation  :) .
