Upside down tomatoes?
« on: March 20, 2009, 06:23:19 PM »
I just saw an add on TV for one of those things they call a topseeturby. I am going to have over 50 tomato plants this year in the garden but would like to try something like this. Really all it is, is a 5 gallon bucket with 3 holes cut in the sides about 1/3 up from the bottom. You just put your tomato plants in the holes and hang the bucket about 6 feet off the ground. Seems like a neat idea. Have any of you tried this? I think I will hang one on my back deck this year and maybe put a cucumber plant in one of the holes. I like the idea because you do not have to tie the plants up and it keeps the fruit off the ground. Dale

I saw that add as well. I'm not much of a gardener but it sounded simple enought even I could do it. Only problem is our summer temps usually average in the 50's for the lows. Will they grow outside or would I need to keep them indoors. Regards

As long as it does not get down to freezing they should grow but if they freez one time they will be done. Dale

The missus and I have playing around with this idea for a while now and prefer it to ground planting. It keeps them away from critters and such. Easier to take care of and we can plant different varieties in the same container. we tried different containers and are using the deep fiber baskets now( don't have to water as often) and I agree, no staking, no fussing around with the buggers. Neighbors down the road don't know what to think seeing all these baskets hanging from trees, the porch etc. I thought about trying to convert them but their still pretty old school ;D  maybe when they compare their harvest to mine they will give it a shot.

My mother tried this last year with good results. She just had me make up some buckets. I gave her some brandywines started from seed. They did as well as mine in the ground. They have clay soil which is not conducive to a garden. The only negative I could see was the use of miracle grow instead of the cheaper 13-13-13.
