.223 why is it printing poorly

First, I have lurked here for a couple of months mainly because I bought a Handi.  I have had this Rossi .223 for 3 or 4 years.  It is scoped and the mounts and the scope are fast to the receiver.  It has a thin barrel, which may be the problem.  The gun does lock up tight.  The first shot lands where it is supposed to, the second shot is always 2 inches high and the third shot is same height as the second but 3 inches to the right.  Please tell me if what I am about to do is the correct and most efficient way.  It appears that perhaps the barrel is heating up quickly and it could have some pressure exerted by the forearm; therefore I will put an O ring on the lug first.  If that does not help, then I will hog the forearm out.  I like the feel of the rifle and hope to be able to correct its deficiency.  Any advice will be appreciated.

Sorry that I did not continue.  Almost every other shot, out of 15, landed to the right, vertical stringing of about 3 inches of the 3rd shot.  There were 2 out of the last 13 that hit close to shot #2.  I was shooting off of a rest and another question that comes to mind now is "could resting the forearm on the Rossi on the rest(sandbag) contribute to this grouping?".  I can not remember if I was constant in placement of the forearm.  This was the first time that I had shot this rifle.  This will be another variable that I will have to check.

I had a Rossi .243 with the same problem, life is short so I just sold it after fighting with it for a couple of months.  Lots of the H&R's also have this problem, so I think it is just how things work with break open rifles.  How they lock up means everything to how accurate they are, People say to try shooting it without the forearm on to see if it has somethig to do with the forearm pressure, but I would not hold my breath thinking this is a fix.  Go read the faq's on the H&R board, everything that applies to them will apply to yours.  Good luck.  Larry

Thank you Larry.  I am going out Wed and if nothing works I will have a Rossi for sale.  Any Takers  :<)
