Handi moose..

I was at the Trading Post in Maine yesterday. They have a nice bull moose mounted for all the folks to see. I asked one of the security guys what the spread of the rack was since I had seen a somewhat larger one while deer hunting near my home, and he told me to check the plaque near the mount. Well, I didn't find out what the spread was, but it is obviously over 40", and probably closer to 45". What I did find out that the moose was killed by a 13 year old boy using a Handi rifle in 30-30. Just thought I would post this for those doubting the performance of that combo......

I have it on good authority that no 30 caliber bullet can kill such a beast. In addition no self respecting moose would let itself die from such a bullet. The mouse and its family would be laughed out of the forest. Must be a mistake, you misspoke.

Yep, had to be a mistake. Must've been at least a .450 Whiz-Bang Super Magnum to kill a Moose.
.30-30 will hardly even kill a mouse.

That may be true. I've seen a number of deer and hogs requiring multiple shots to bring down with 30/30. I've witnessed a Black Bear who traveled quite far after having a Marlin 336 emptied on him, with most of the shots impacting the chest area. I do not know what load they were using, but it's not unheard of.....All were less then 50 yards distance too.

  I've killed a number of deer with a 30-30 , the majority of them died within 10-15 yards of where they were shot...BUT.. I shot a nice  point buck thru the lungs and a second shot in the neck [ missed the spine] and he ran a full 200 yards in brush, blowing blood hard out both sides...... point is, I think it is sometimes more the deer than the caliber. I don't believe that deer had a quart of blood left in him, he just didn't know it............

   I was told when I was a kid that the 30-30 wasn't a 'killer', but I've come to think otherwise. Use it within its limits and it will do just fine.

have not been to the Kittrey Trading Post in Maine, in about 2 years-neat store......i have killed lot's of deer with a Winchester 94 in 30-30........killed them D E A D

Ok,  in all fairness,  the 30-30 isn't the ideal moose cartridge,  but it isn't impossible to kill a moose with it.

Most Moose are shot within ranges that a 30-30 will work fine at.  Especially with the small Moose they have in the states, (Lower 48).

We have unrealistic expectations of bullets.

The red baron was shot at over 600 yds from a 303 bullet shot from a machine gun shot from the right chest side thru the heart out the left with the bullet on the left side inside his clothes. He managed to land the plane.

A deer or wild animal even in a minute can travel a longways.

A cape buffalo shot thru the heart behaved normally even twenty minutes later.

When a bullet goes thru an animal much of the energy leaves with the bullet. So is even 4000 foot lbs that much, obviously not.

I wouldn't doubt it as I lived and worked up in the bush for 12 yrs.  Most of the moose shot by the native hunters were shot with the 30-30.  We sold more 30-30's to the trappers than any other rifle, they weren't handis but lever actions.

The thing with bullets is "just going through" is not always ideal. That's why I normally try to use a good premium bullet for hunting in most cases. Of course I also use exceptionally cheap 154grain Wolf on deer and hawgs, but with the tiny size of what is crawling around in my shooting areas, I can get away with it. If I move to different areas with heavier game, I tend to dump the Saiga Rifle and go with something with more thump. I still resist lightweight wonder bullets though. I just can't grasp a weenie light bullet with a plastic tip for game. It just seems wrong. Which is proven incorrect every game day. But not by me.

I could'nt understand why you guys are using a low powered round such as the 30-30 then I figured it out!!

What you are calling moose, in the lower 48 we call mice and squirrels. Now its all clear.
